2025 GTS Grow Reports - Cowpeas (Vigna unguiculata)

How are they growing?

Lovely seed, your sending some in for GTS?!?!? LOVE, JUST love the colors you have, great diversity in your patch. Nice grow outs.

Absolutely! As the summer has worn on, the bush type plants died out and now I have a ton left of definitely not “bush” cowpeas. My bed for them was a long 25sqft raised bed, no trellis, and they’ve basically tried to take over the world after escaping it. I’ve got vines everywhere! Lesson learned for next year, I suppose, but with the productivity of such a small patch, worth it.

A disaster. The area where I planted them is still green, but the cowpeas are very unhappy. However, extra cowpeas were planted next to new poplar and willow cuttings. They are doing well, and I will have, I think, enough to save for next year to try again. (In an area where they will have regular irrigation!)

That is how it goes sometimes, the soil that you find that grows your seeds is what you go forward with. Don’t give up, plant again and watch the plants you have for seed production. I lost all my watermelon plants this cycle. It happens , plant again.

As a reminder to send in seed by November 22, 2025 so it will go into the GTS 2026 mix. Thank you for growing a garden and saving seed. Save some seed for planting in your garden again too.
