Corn (Grain and Sweet)

High lowel this is Larry Morris and I was wondering were you able to get the perennial teosinte that we had talked about this the only way I knew how to get a hold of you thank you even if you didn’t get any

Hi Larry!

Yes, I was able to get two accessions. I will be planting them soon.

A tiny bit of the sweet gene exists in all my grain corns. It manifests as an occasional wrinkled kernel on an occasional cob. It doesn’t interfere at all with the intended use of the corn.

It’s a problem for me to have hard (grain) kernels in my sweet corn, but not the other way around.

Hello my wild popcorn self-seed from last year and I just thought I’d send you a picture of one of them I got them cut all over but most of my pulled up
I’m not sure how to send a picture

does anybody know if Lowell McCampbell is all right because he was in the eye of the hurricane look like where he lived

Hey Larry,

The hurricane didn’t affect us much, which is typical. Most times we lose power but everything else is fine. About 80% of the corn got flattened. It has been an odd year for corn anyway.

We had a bad drought and heat in May-June which meant the corn I plant usually in June was very stunted. The yellow popcorn mix u sent grew 1 ft tall, flowered, but no silks. I had better success with a popcorn mix from the southwest, but even it was not a good harvest.

The teosinte seeds that were crossed with popcorn are flowering now and many have silks. They look great, although a large number of the seeds didn’t make it from something eating them. The same happened to the popcorn teosinte small cobs you sent. None made it, but I planted half and still have the other half. I will have to plant it next year.

I’m working a job that is taking almost all my mental and physical energy and so it has been hard to keep up on things in the garden.

I hope you’re doing well and having a nice summer.

Lowell
