Yay! That’s great!
My older white dandelion seed never germinated, but I have 4 small pink dandelions seedlings started.
Yay! Congratulations!
Technical difficulties and I lost the in process pics. Here’s the finished product and it is wonderful! So clear and beautiful. The taste was a bit like a Blue Moon ale at first. A month later it is mellowing out and becoming sweeter and drier. Developing an interesting profile I feel would really compliment a Dandelion. Thank you so much for the recipe!
Dandelions as weed control. Suggesting that the invasive Reeds Sweet Grass and Field Bind Weed would be better suited out of the garden while allowing Cauliflower and Peas to grow on. Wildly wonderful!
I’m not wild about dandelions in my garden beds because I’d rather have my selected crops drinking the water I irrigate them with (I’m stingy!), but I’m pleased to have them as a groundcover to compete with bindweed and grass in my lawn.
In general, I’ll usually tolerate dandelions in my garden beds until there’s something else I want in that spot, and that’s true for most edible weeds.
Excellent to hear your mead turned out good. Now you need to start keeping a whole lot of bees.
I heard somewhere that sunflower repels vine weed they don’t like each other
That jives with something I’ve been noticing: bindweed doesn’t seem to feel particularly enthusiastic about growing near my Jerusalem artichokes.
Yessssssssssssss!
Mind you, this implies I probably shouldn’t plant other things in the morning glory family near sunchokes, such as sweet potatoes. And I have toyed with the idea of having sweet potatoes sprawl as a groundcover in between sunchokes. So that nixes a potential companion planting.
But I’m very much not going to complain about a crop that drives away bindweed.
Yes! Wow keeping bees…That would be beyond phenomenal. Thanks to the awesome bees who made this Mead possible! Dandelions as food for those first emerging pollinators for sure. Here’s apic of one of my friends. A Carpenter bee from the home they created for themselves in the shed . No honey but a ton of personality. They wrestle like brothers in the sky. Buzz right up and look me in the eye. Fun! Thanks again for the easy to follow and detailed instructions. Being able to brew ones own beverages? Very wonderful!
Um…right on! As soon as I read this I ran outside to look and… totally! What? Bindweed usually crawls up and chokes out but it looks like it’s running away? It is either clinging to itself or travels to find another and then begin the strangling. The Sunflowers? Unscathed and in control. Naturally easy ways to grow what you love. I dig it!
Which is exactly why I started this thread a few days ago.
If you notice any other cool crop/weed pairings (anti-companion plantings, if you will ), post them over there! I’d love to have a thread full of cool ideas to drive out weed infestations just by planting the things we want.
