Had little unusually long 5 day pause from my plot when it was raining almost every day or just wet. Not really fun to be there when it’s wet and there wasn’t anything that really needed to be done. Missed when exactly first tomato opened flower, but maybe 2 days before 8.7 when the picture is taken. Now there are more that are flowering. Tagged all plants that had flower open 10.7 and another tag for those that opened before 12.7 to make it easier to find them when making crosses and saving seeds. Almost all the fastest to flower were partially wilds and as before pimp crosses had the most. Except for ones that came from cross that I made to one of the direct sown lyco x habro F2 cross, which I thought might be a dom volunteer, but which based on how this years lyco x habro F2s turned out looks likely to be just that what it was supposed to be. So maybe the best are from 50%lyco/25%habro/12,5%pimp/12,5%chees, which is mix that I’m trying to get to. Although I will have some other wild lines that I will merge to that at some point, but that would be one breeding population where I make crosses just inside the population until it comes time to merge or I need to add some LB tolerance.
First eggplants opened first flowers 19.7 and now there has been some more. It seems the center rows have had slight advantage as all but one flowering plant are there. Must be from the time when cloth was on and it keeps the center slightly warmer. Not sure how to combat that so that all have as even conditions as possible. Been thinking of combining several species so that one species could be in the middle and other on the outsides to make it as even as possible. I’m not sure if I can do without the cloth. At least it would be tighter and more uncertain. At least it looks like they can do without clear plastic at the start. Now the start of the flowering was about the same as small trial with F1s I had in 2024 even without the clear plastic at the start and cooler summer. So maybe there is some improvement. They seem to grow quite happily even if it’s not been very hot summer. Even the ones sown on bare ground have continued growing albeit slowly. Might need to try small transplants on bare ground some year to see how they grow as that’s the final target (for now).
