Hi from Finland and my plans for 2023

Yes, there is about hectare of land that has been fallow for several years and I can cut what I need or someone might cut it with machines. About half of it was fairly recently plowed and has mainly weeds, but other half is mainly hay/grass. There might also be some unused hay bales in nearby farms that I might get.

Looks like a great setup! This is more or less what I am/will be doing to expand my garden—so I’ll be very interested in following along.

What is the soil like?

Soil is the other main type here besides glacial till; quite heavily clay based. When it was dry it was a bit loose at spots and hard at other spots. At that time it was really dry. Now it was quite sticky when I tried to make holes for carrots and parsnips. Would have been quite hard if I had to harvest potatoes now. There is maybe 20-30cm of workable soil and after that it’s proper clay. That’s why I’ll try to add as much plant material and manure to build up soil. If I can get lot’s of hay I might overdo to start with just to build up material and supress weeds before going more like what’s needed.

Had quick visit at my other plot and took couple of pictures of how it looks like here in october. It’s been quite typical weather and last night was a bit harder freeze with -8C (17F) at ground level. I have been icefishing one year at this time when it was really unusually cold start to autumn. Now just little puddles where iced over on my neighbors plot. Sun was at it’s highest at 18 degrees when I took pictures. It barely warms and most of ground is in full shade the whole day. Takes another 4 months before it starts to warm again and then another 2 months to thaw the ground.
