Skillcult has new apple seeds available

Yup. I’m waiting (im)patiently for that time to come! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Store is open but seed, scion and pollen sold out. Maybe he is about to add items?

I never even knew that was a flavor you could get! :exploding_head:
Now I’m definitely interested in apple breeding, I have an old Orchard on my property in Maine from when it was an old timey homestead so maybe I have a good place to start.

I know, right?! First Steven Edholm, then Joseph Lofthouse with his chapter on landracing fruit trees, convinced me that I should totally be planting apple seeds.

I have access to the Skillcult scions ($3 support level), some are sold out, but most varieties are still available, fyi. Keep an eye out, because it is probably going to be public within 24 hours.

Thank you for the head’s up! I really, really hope I’ll remember to check it regularly over the next 24 hours, and am able to get the ones I want.

The skillcult store is open

Woo hoo, placed an order!

Three of the varieties I wanted are too much for me to afford this year (Black Strawberry, Vanilla Pink, and Tomboy), so I’ll have to wait for a future year when he has more scionwood for them available, and thus can lower the price. But Chestnut Crab, Cherub, and Amberwine were all at a price I can afford, so I bought them!

One of these babies didn’t make it, but the Chestnut Crab OP seedling did!

I found an apple at the store today that I hadn’t tried before, another Honeycrisp offspring called Pazazz. It’s got a lovely crispness, some sweetness but not cloying, and some lovely pink streaking in the flesh! Looking into it, that pink indicates that the apple was a really good ripe one, so I’d say this one is going to be right up my alley. Since there were 6 nice, fat seeds inside, I tossed them in some starter mix and into the fridge to stratify they go!

I wasn’t able to get any scions this year, but I’m hoping by next year I’m in a position to pick up a few (esp. if Hella Kitty pops up! )

Nifty. I just bought one scion each of each variety that he still has in stock that interests me.

I’m still waiting on my Skillcult seeds from this year to sprout, but in apple-related news… I was able to get some bare-root columnar apples this spring. Eventually they’ll form a privacy hedge to block a rear neighbor’s summer view and noise (they’re nosy for all the wrong reasons and they also play their TV/music on their deck too loud) but they’re also interesting with regards to my far future apple plans. Apparently, the columnar growth habit is a dominant trait, meaning 50/50 chance of passing on. I could see some fun intentionally crossing them with some of my Skillcult offspring.

Just dreaming here, but… columnar red-fleshed apples, columnar cider apples, columnar winter apples. I’m not going to have enough decades to play!

I wasn’t able to get all of my Skillcult apple seeds that I bought last year to sprout last spring . . . but most of the rest are sprouting right now! So that’s good news, if the germination winds up not starting this year.

Not sure how he does it, but apple seeds won’t sprout in the fridge for me, so took them out a couple of weeks ago and got some nice seedlings (as a check, I kept some seeds in the fridge, and they are still dormant)

I grafted 140 apples so far, hopefully the expensive scion wood I bought on the skillcult auction will work out.

I’ve had an apple seed sprout in the fridge before, but I had sort of forgotten about it, so it had grown a stem about 12 inches long that was circling the container, trying to figure out a way out . . . I was so sad that it died when I took it outside! I really wanted to reward that seed for being so persistent.

This year’s SkillCult seeds are germinating now, and a couple varieties from EFN, too. I have some that are pretty exciting (for me) and hope they all thrive!

Nice! What are the seeds you got from EFN?

I got Plentiful and “Kelly Renee.” Both are crab types, with significant disease resistance and longer-hanging fruit. They’ll go nicely with all the crab and crab-crosses I got from SkillCult!
