What would you like to see in a ficifolia (fig leaf gourd) grex?

I think there are five of us growing accessions for GRIN now. Is anyone growing fig-leaf gourd this year who isn’t growing an accession for GRIN?

I am growing a few different ones and no GRIN accessions: Joseph L’s, seed from a neighbor, @Anna gave me some seeds from Bay Area grower, and that reminds me today I’ll start the white seeds I mentioned before then got distracted.

I’m growing them milpa style in my sweet corn patch.

I’m so glad you’re growing those out!

Excellent! That’s very cool!

I am also planning on growing some of the same ficifolia from @julia.dakin

This year I am still groing some from seed swaps and different sellers.

Ooh, so you’ve already starting a landrace!

Yes indeed :-), with 3 or 4 different varieties

That’s great!

I am now growing those pumpkins, It says on the package cucurbita maxima, but they look ficifolia to me, and the seeds are black. Is the package wrong? Probably it is.

Here we start to grow them in late summer although the package says it is a spring sowing. Got a couple of seeds from my neighbor.

I only looked at the first search result I found, but seems very possibly ficifolia

Yep, I found other places saying it, package is wrong. It makes me think that other packages are inaccurate too. These are mine ficifolia.

They are ready to eat and save seeds or better to wait and risk frost?

Mine are kind of more round. Seeds are hard hard. And the seeds are white, immature ones? The flavour is ok. Zucchini like or immature melon?
Looking for more diversity.

Yes your seeds seem immature. Got some mature ones (black) of this year and a neighbor of mine has some also many of his strain, apparently very productive. I will put some in the EU serendipity seed swap. I am no specialist of fig leaf taste: used them as zucchinis: fine but not great I would say for now…

If the seeds are thick and hard, it’s possible they’re mature. Some fig-leaf gourds have white seeds. Maybe plant one in a cup of soil and see!

Nice, maybe when the package comes back to me next year I will get some.
I really enjoyed mine like a zucchini. My zucchini plants do not like the cold, but the ficifolia is doing fine.

They feel full. I will try to plant them for sure.
At least some of the seeds I’ve sown were black.

The seeds look very similar to those of watermelon. Seeds are in the middle of the flesh, tedious to harvest them. Especially if you want to eat the flesh.
