What would you like to see in a pepo squash grex?

You weren’t kidding when you said it was the biggest. That one was hard to miss! I sat down with my C. pepo seeds last night (what was left after sharing most with a friend who doesn’t have as much of a borer problem) and worked on a game plan for crosses, if possible. I’m gonna keep my hopes up that this interspecies cross can bring some resistance in, and let me grow summer and winter pepos again.

Do you know if the interspecies hybrid is male-fertile? I know Tetsukabuto is not, you have to have a separate pollinator; it would be helpful to know if I’ll only be able to make one-way crosses with the pepo hybrid so I can prioritize. I’d love to get some seed back from the crosses in order to contribute to either a pepo OR a separate interspecies hybrids grex.

I know that the person who sent it in said, “This is a fertile interspecific cross.” So here’s hoping it’s perfect for your needs!

Hee hee, yes, those seeds were enormous. It’s awesome – makes it easy to tell which seed is the special one in the mix, if you’re looking!

Well, I guess I’ll be staring at the first male blossoms (if they don’t abort) looking for pollen on the regular, lol.

Would like to see:

  • Squash selected for flower production
  • Squash selected for succulent stems
  • Squash with high starch content (see example in Pepo for culinary school)

It sounds like this variety would be a really great fit for you:

I know! I just ordered some this year. Would be nice to see some experimentation on these secondary crops.

Clearly you’ve got some experimentation to play around with!

I am going to grow the GTS Winter pep grex this year.
The other pepos I want to grow probably have been grown by someone here. Are there any that don’t seem good candidates for winter pepos?

I view most posts in my email app so I do not see some posts. What was the conclusion to the reckless Pepo grex?

I honestly don’t know what the conclusion to the Reckless Pepo mix was for me, because I mixed them up with a whole bunch of other pepo varieties before planting them. I have no idea which seeds did what.

I will say that last year, I had a summer squash that was the tastiest summer squash I’ve ever eaten, so I most emphatically saved those seeds to share with this year’s summer squash grex, and to plant myself this year.

So are Maxidiwiac and Maycock Pepo (EFN), are they suitable as winter squash?

I don’t know, having not tried them yet. That’s certainly my hope, though. I think I may have both of those mixed into my tupperware of “all pepo seeds to sow” – I know for sure I have Maxidiwiac seeds somewhere in there.
