GTS seed doing well, they were started in pplug trays and transplanted over the past two weeks into the ground, and inside a greenhouse, with trellis. Limiting spaces, everything will grow crowded, about 20 varieties in addition to the GTS mix.
Already, a varmint has chewed off several plants. Gotta be a gopher or rat. Hoping it doesnt bring all of its friends to dine on tender shoots.
Still have about 60 diverse plants growing even after the ground sqirrel ate 20 plants…and all the lima beans twice. Replanted the lima beans a third time, I think ten made it.
Cucumbers are a large count mix of all colors, with pickling and slicers mixed. There are the mini cukamelons in there too.
I thought I was skunked, not many pollinators this year…but i did find two little cucumbers in the greenhouse jungle. Different leaf shapes to observe as well.
I’m in zone 7b Knoxville, TN, direct sown on May 23, 2025. It has been a very rainy May and June, more than usual. Half of my bean teepee this year is cucumbers (the other half is a big mix of common beans and a mix of scarlet runner bean varietals). For cucumbers I planted the GTS cucumber seeds, DMR 401 from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, and the Kevin Bane bred Long Cucumber Grex from Experimental Farm Network grown not far from me. Plants are looking great despite being planted so late. Initially sewn under cages because of squirrels, bunnies, and toddlers.
Nice setup.
The cucumber grexes and landraces are really leafing out now. It won’t stop raining. Humidity and heat are normal here, but this much actual rain in May and June is unusual. Some comfrey hanging out with the cucumber grex seedlings, volunteer beans (more seeded common beans and scarlet runner beans are growing on the other side of the bean pyramid), and some marigold seeds from a friend are germinating.
Thanks! I built the bean teepee/trellis cone last year for my kids and grew common beans on it. The mr is a giant and even he fits inside it standing up. It got overgrown with bermuda from my lawn in the fall so I had to lay cardboard down again on top this spring, top with compost, dress with wood chips and add new jute netting because last year’s jute string broke down (on purpose, that way the bean vines can all get composted together with the jute).
Do the ripe Cucumber fruits taste good? I really want to try cutting them like Dosakai Melons into veggie chunks to stir-fry or put into omlet.
