The space to share grow out observations of okra with photographs of your plants and seeds. Start with what you have and include as many varieties as possible to start a swarm. A bonus is everything on the plant is edible, flowers, pods, leaves and there are many ways to prepare each for eating. Check out this book too…its a great read with loads of information on different varieties, history and recipes.
Yikes, I run out of space, gotta get these shelled…they wont go into the okra mix until i can complete a germination grow out. They are most likely from 2021 or 2022 and are still safe stored inside the pods, no insect damage.
Anyone else have okra seed still inside the dried pods?
This is a pretty accurate representation of all of my okra at the moment.
I’ve had good germination thanks to lots of recent rain and now they are all fighting the weeds and bermudagrass.
That sprout looks healthy and happy. Did you notice if any have red stems?
I haven’t looked very closely but I’m sure some do. I have many red varieties in my mixes.
It looks like I’m going to have quite good germination in my okra patch this year, in spite of near record low temperatures the first week it was in the ground. The original seed two years ago included Clemson Spineless, Hill Country Red, a Burmese variety, Gold Coast, Star of David, and Silver Queen. (I didn’t see any white pods last year, so that trait has likely been diluted or lost). I see volunteer cowpeas, common beans, and tomatoes coming up as well. I’ve also got a volunteer okra plant in the middle of the peppers.
There are several red stems in the plants. Meanwhile, I got my hands on some Red Burgundy seed, so I will be adding a few of them to the patch.
