2025 GTS Grow Reports - Tomatillo ( Physalis philadelphica)

A place to share your GTS seed growing season. Did you receive tomatillo seed? What color fruits do you harvest? Share photo’s too and observations from the garden for the whole season. And…I grew both the GTS mix of tomatillo and ground cherry and didnt label the plants well. So Im not exactly sure whats in the photos and will have to share my harvest to see if I get ground cherries or tomatillos. LOL :joy:

My early indoor seedlings from the tomatillo mix started out strong but were sadly devoured by a rodent who chewed their way into my grow tent. The second round are in a flat and not super large but I’ll try and get them in the ground in the next week or so.

Me too, rodents are one of my challenges and getting plants grown large enough so they can survive being chewed on.

I don’t want to even think about the number of plants that guy ate in one night… peppers tomatillos, tomatoes it was a massacre. It chowed down on the sweet potatoes too but thankfully those are still putting out slips.

I feel your anguish, the ground squirrels stripped the leaves from tomatillo plants two fert tall, ate 3 plantings of sprouted lima beans and a 10 foot row of sugar snap/snow peas. But, didnt touch anything else..so those plants kept them busy enough for everything else to make it. The greenhouse is 20x40 and totally a jungle.

This is what I started with for the plug tray. The markers fell away so I wont know if I have tomatillo or ground cherries for the harvest. Its still to soon to make the determination since the fruits are small.

Wow! That is lush in there! I’d love to have a greenhouse like that someday.

Thanks, its always kinda a hot mess, overcrowded but full of food and seeds. :lizard::lady_beetle::sheaf_of_rice::herb::seedling::butterfly::bug::rofl:

Here’s most of our mixed up tomatillo patch. I’ve also got a half dozen or so plants at home (2 intentional, the rest volunteers).

After seeing your plants, i think i have mostly tomatillos. The ground cherries have a different leaf shape.

My tomatillos were a mix of a hybrid from a seed company, seeds I saved from a store bought tomatillos and the ones I got from GTS. They are doing great! in the food forest, they are quite big plants and have lots of blooms. In the raised bed, they are competing with onions for a bit longer and are smaller, but still with blooms. of course, I killed quite a few and snails have eaten a one bed that had tomatillos. Is there any sort of “snail resistance” in any plants?

I dont grow with the snails. Your observations are important. My growing environment doesnt support snails, its too hot and dry.

We have lived in this area for 16 yrs. At our old house, the snails were a small problem, but I could put out cups of beer in the flower bed, buried, and it would fill it over night. Here, at this house, in an hour I can pick up between 1 and 2 hundred snails into a bucket of soapy water. One imagines Central Texas is too hot for snails to survive, but when it gets hot, they hunker down and stick themselves to some surface. I figure in a few years, I might have impacted the snail population here, if I keep collecting several hundred each spring and fall. Or maybe I just need to get ducks :zany_face: maybe its not a snail problem, but a lack of ducks problem

Planted my seed today. Some Chupon de malinalco and some of the GTS, I think mine are '23 seed, I’d have to check.
I don’t even know if I like them but if they grow alright I’ll at least save as much seed to send in as I can.

We started some tomatillos from GTS Tomatillo mix and some from our collection but they all died.

There are some tomatillo plants planted in the community garden where we garden, and we were able to collect some for growing in Fall.


Group of tomatillos on the right are from the community garden. The lone one to the left is from Walmart, we love it’s size. We want to process all of the seeds and try again in the fall, yet being able to still enjoy the fruits for salsa verde.

:red_question_mark:Question :red_question_mark: I was wondering if any of you know: if there is any way to both process the tomatillos for their seeds and still enjoy the tomatillos to make salsa verde

You can scoop out a small number of seeds from each one with a spoon to ferment and eat the rest.

I could try it like that.

I was hoping to open them up take out all the seeds and reserve the leftover tomatillo chunks to make salsa verde this way,

The salsa may turn out a bit drier in texture than usual, but that doesn’t mean it won’t still taste good.

Thank you for your advice. It came out the similar to the texture in the video, without adding water.
