Share your growing season here from the GTS seed. The mix includes all stem colors of green, red, pink and white. Curious to know the color of stems that grow well in your garden. Varieties can be added to the grow season from your research and from what grows well in your zone.
The seed I had contributed was collected from celery that had self sowed three years in a row. I grew it in a warmer zone with no overwintering. The seed fell onto the ground by July, sat through a hot summer and resprouted in February. The pink and red stem grew mostly in the sandy soil.
Just popping in to say that I had excellent germination with this mix. I planted 80 mini soil blocks and ended up with plants in something like 95% of blocks and around 150 plants total. So all of my gardening friends got texts today with offers of free baby celery plants I blocked up 80 for myself and hope to ultimately plant out about 60 of them sometime next month.
I wonder, has anyone tried to grow grocery store celery? I’m curious what cultivar type they are, bubling with fat stalks or leafy like the chinese cultivars? or are they Celeraic by any chance?
Speaking of which is anyone here growing Celeraic? I’m curious how these would hybridize with the other varities, especially the chinese pink leaf/stalk types.
For me there are too many unknowns with seeds from grocery store spices, so they aren’t part of my growing project. Celeriac hasn’t grown at all for me. For me starting the garden, I had to choose seed grown from southern climates and go forward. Knowing the origin of the seeds was helpful.
Hmm… so if I grow them, what will happen? Contribute seeds or not?
I wonder what unknown are you referring too? Unknown variety? Aren’t they all the same Celery type domesticated for seed? or just a regular cultivar and seeds saved from it?
I’m too curious if the seeds in the grocery store are a commercial variety of Celery bred for seed production or just any variety or a mix of a bunch of varieties. If it’s a bred for seed production, than this is what I want as all the other parts of celery kind of suck. The seeds are the only good tasting part & even that is a little bitter but in a nice way.
There are so many choices to purchase seeds. For me it’s helpful to have some sort of growing information and if they are hybrids or not. Then I know what to look for as they grow out. Seed size, flavor, germination, time to mature, stalk size, leaf canopy, etc. could be some considerations for selecting varieties. So far, I’m happy that I get decent growth of stalks and leaves and then mature seed. The celery I grew out had intense celery flavor, not bitter, and seemed salty. I didnt think about tasting the seeds, they are super small. I haven’t had any insect pressure and was surprised to get seed without wintering over. There is a gopher that likes eating them by chewing off the roots and pulling the entire clump of stalks underground.
Very interesting, I didn’t know bitterless celery existed? but perhaps the leaves would taste bitter?
I’ve heard celery leaves were mildly poisonous? but perhaps it’s the same compound that gives celery its flavor?
Indeed! About Poppy sized seeds, however their small size is fantastic for a spice blend.
Have you also tried Ajwain Seeds (Trachyspermum ajman)? It’s seeds are bigger but have a much more hotter mint-breath effect. Oddly enough it helps soothe my troat when I have a cough.
There is also a Firleaf celery (Cyclospermum leptophyllum), wild weed I found growing next to my Gym parking lot. It’s seeds are also just as tiny but I haven’t tried eating them. I’m not sure how edible they are as “The leaves are used as a parsley substitute, though they occasionally have an acrid flavour” according to theferns : Cyclospermum leptophyllum - Useful Tropical Plants
but maybe the seeds are okay? similar to how cilantro leaves taste bad but cilantro seeds (aka coriander) taste good?
Also do your plants make a BUNCH of celery seeds? enough to be feasible to eat to some as spices?
every gardener!!! I feel your pain, it’s the reason I don’t garden in my apartment balcony. I gave up.
Welp, safe to say i will have an abundant supply of celery this year! First time growing it but i have lots of plants to gift and plenty to shove in every nook and cranny i can manage in the garden. I sowed em heavy into a covered tray on March 3rd and I am very excited to taste home grown celery for the first time in my life.
My G2S celery had awesome germination. Im excited to see what neat colors and characters come out of this magical mix. Celery is one of my favorite seeds to save: it’s adorable and smells delicious.
Hoping everyone growing celery from the GTS mix gets at least two different stem colors. Take a moment to taste the celery and share your thoughts on the flavor.
My celery is plugging right along! Most of them seem to be colored? The white ones seem the most dramatic and not as drought tolerant.
We’re having crazy weather at the moment. This week is usually our last frost. It’s going to be 90 tomorrow. Then it might get down to the mid-30s on Monday. Should I plant them as soon as the temps drop (Saturday or so), or keep holding off till I’m sure the frosts are behind us?
Good question, it’s up to you when to plant and avoid the frost. My experience didn’t include growing with frosty temperatures. Try both planting times, just plant a few now to see if they hold up in the cold. Then plant the rest when the frosty nights are over and determine which ones do better. Looks like mostly the red stem and some of the pink colored stems are doing well?
Celery is plugging along! This bed is essentially just 4-year decomposed wood chips with very little compost and leaf mulch added… So I expect nitrogen is quite low. There’s a few that have really dark leaves so I’m definitely noting those for seed saving.
