2026 GTS Grow Reports: Spinach (Spinacia oleracea)

Let’s grow some spinach! Please share updates and photos of your spinach grow-outs of GTS seed or any other spinach projects you’re working on.

I’m so happy to include the diverse GTS mix in my grex this year. I’ve been working on a reslient spinach grex for 3 seasons. Last year, I added OSA’s mix of a ton of varieties from their trial and saw so many neat colors and leaf shape. I started some of the GTS seed in a tray next to my grex to ensure I get enough seed for next year to then select harder for direct seeding qualities. We have a short season here in Montana and it’s been fun to see them get a head start. When I planted them out yesterday I direct seeded the rest of the GTS packet in the middle row to compare.

My grex is on the left and GTS is on the right here. I’d say about half the GTS seed germinated and are vigorous and beautiful. I’m looking forward to seeing the direct sown ones pop up.

I will be selecting for flavor and color mostly since we don’t have a ton of pest or disease pressure here for spinach, and for long lasting edible leaves (bolt resistance). I would like to work on a winter hardy strain from this growout’s seed next season. What will you be selecting for?!
