2026 Onion Grow Report

First time growing onions!
Not sure if there’s already a 2026 onion report, as i didnt see one, so my apologies if i missed it!

Wintersown outside in trays on January 24th and started sprouting in the last week or so with consistent germination rates. Zone 8b West Coast BC Canada

There is snow in the forecast so im not sure if the lids will be enough to protect the seedlings or if i should use the plastic cover that my plant rack came with. Perhaps i shouldve planted the onions in two separate trays and tried out both methods…

We shall see how things go! Only time will tell

I just harvested the first of my onions for the year. Since these were planted from sets, they should be capable of setting seed this year. Two have gone to seed, but they divided so I’m going to keep them for a possible spreading onion population.

Any suggestions on forcing flowering with domestic onions?

Hmmmm my knowledge of onions is very limited but what popped into my mind to potentially force flowering might be to mimmick cold weather, since in my climate you have to overwinter onions to get seed the next year as a biennial plant life cycle. Maybe stick your best onion bulbs in the fridge for a month or so then replant and see what happens? Since they were grown from set so technically second year onions, they might just need that extra nudge… Again, i have noooo experience behind my thought process but i thought id share either way incase it sparks a better idea on your end

Yeah, that’s all I’m finding but without real information. I don’t want to risk my best onions on a maybe, and I don’t want to lose a year of adaptation. My onion seeds are well over 10 years old. I 'll try for a fall harvest with them, but no expectations.

It’s June now. If I wait for them to fully dry down and then put them in the refrigerator for a month, that will be mid August. If I then put them in ground there should be enough time for seeds before first frost.

I"ll just need to keep an eye on them.
