2 mexican strains, 2 southern strains, 1 black corn, and pacific north west corn overseeded with red and white clover. Hopefully the deer and raccoons wont completely destroy the garden this year.
Looks like a nice plot. Keep us up to date. Last year my first two rounds of corn were eaten leaving me corn less. So, I know the pain. I also seeded clover with the corn, which didn’t germinate or were eaten by chickens and wild birds, out so the plot is still bare. I just threw in some cool weather crops to try to get something growing in there.
I am very curious about bigger pests like deer and bear, as i am also going to try growing corn this year and will definitely have those animals around. Let me know if you see any strains or traits that seem to do better against those animals!
I was left corn less last year. I had rented half acre an hour away from where i live and the deer ate every thing i planted. Same thing happened in my backyard only the raccoons helped.
Yeah the deer i have affectionately named wingless land locust due to them wiping me out of everything i planted last year. They both would seem to ideally need electric fencing of aome kind to keep them out but not at the point where i can set that up.
Very curious about that too. So far the deer have gotten only my sunflowers (reaching over the 2ft fence) and the bunnies ate the squash that’s not fenced… interesting I find that so far they too out the Sweet Meat squash twice already, but have (so far) left the Nanticoke landrace that I had right next to it… may be a coincidence but who knows?
