hmm… why not just have dirt covered seeds? I guess it’s up to you but dirt can be heavy depending on how much sample you need.
Also I wonder if seeds grown on poor quality soil don’t need their soil sample since the soil is crap? I’m thinking about Urban Foraging for wild edible seeds? Many have car exhast, sprays & other nasty stuff. The seeds are good to save cuz I’m gonna continue the next generation organically.
Many unique wild edibles grow commonly in Urban areas. I wouldn’t want to get a soil sample from there if you get what I’m saying.
I found Feral Tomatoes, Lambquaters, Amaranths, Vetch, Chickweed, Mustard, and much more like this.
Its all good, everythung has something to contribute. Its all about the mix. Have you read Fukuoka books? They are intriguing…
I picked up a good book on corn.. talking about origins and teosinte influence.
I haven’t read Fukuoka books yet, I might have them somewhere in my library. I get the general gist of his methods. Great Philosophy! I just really enjoy pruning tho , I get the value of an unpruned tree self pruning but pruning is just so thereputic for me, otherwise I’d be pruning random trees & shrubs in the woods like I occasionally do hehe.
Its a fabulous book! I was happy to find it at a used bookstore. A great addition for my library. Several books from the thirties on soils, seeds and grafting fruit trees, and even one on older apple varieties, im thrilled.
Yes, I want a website with a whole-plant-kingdom phylogenetic tree an interactive format to browse through so badly. That would be amazing.
It would be great to have it open to edit, like Wikipedia – that would be such a fantastic way to share information. Especially if it let people add things like information about what kinds of growing conditions they’ve found a particular species likes in their particular climate – wouldn’t that rock?
Just a thought, but if the soil is terrible and the plants are growing well in it, there may very well be some excellent symbiotic microbes in that soil that are great survivors.
That would be a cool feature to add! But I would recommend rolling that out later, and/or even making it a separate website that can be linked to from it.
The reason I think it would be best to make it semi-separate is that the information on useful species would be timeless, while the information on what people have available for trade would go obsolete very quickly, and some people are bound to enter it in once and then wander away from the site and never answer queries or ever update it. So I think it would be best to make the reference site its own thing, but I think it would also be appropriate to have an easy link at the bottom of each page to head to a page about that species on the sister site where you can browse for people to trade with (or places to buy seeds from).
I love the annotated bibliography to find a selection of the research articles and even more information on the subjects inside each chapter. So much has been done, its great for reading.
I’ve updated the Phylogenic Tree again. Fixed some Calculation issues for the final number of plant families. Also removed Caryophyllaceae Subfamilies, it’s outdated classification. That plant family only has Tribes.
New changes are I split Brassicaceae into 2 Subfamiles, split Taxaceae into 2 Subfamilies & Merged the Subfamily Xanthoceratoideae into Aceroideae after looking closer at the Sapindaceae Phylogenic Tree. Finally I recalculated the Numbers.
SVG File has been updated on my Discord since I can’t upload SVG files here unfortunately.
