Canadian Seed Share - 2025 Grow Reports

This is a thread for discussion about how the Going to Seed mixes from the Canadian seed share pilot program are working for you!

This includes the following 10 mixes:

  • Watermelon (Canada)
  • Cucumber (Canada)
  • Squash - Moschata (Canada)
  • Squash - Maxima (Canada)
  • Sweet corn (Canada)
  • Muskmelon - Polar Mix (Canada)
  • Muskmelon - Delicious Mix (same as USA)
  • Muskmelon - Landrace Discovery Mix (same as USA)
  • Broccoli (98% same as USA mix)
  • Common Bean (Canada)

Which ones are you growing this year?
So far almost 50 orders have been made, and we still have some stock available.

Wish list for 2026 and 2027’s Canadian seed share program:

  • seeds grown from the 2025 program
  • Promiscuous/Panamorous tomato seeds
  • Returns from GTS obligate outcrossing tomatoes (save those seed separately)
  • True potato seed
  • Root crops (carrot, beets,…) - avoid commercial F1 hybrids
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Any other ideas you might be excited about?

Special thanks to all the seed contributors, including:

I started some GTS Canada broccoli today and GTS Canada watermelon. Started them in an unheated greenhouse so nighttime temps are still pretty low especially for melons. But we’ll see. I started the GTS watermelon alongside some yellow petite watermelon so I can see who is faster.

Not the best picture but GTS broccoli was popping up after only three days

First landrace watermelon is up. Average nighttime temperatures outside are about 0C. The greenhouse is unheated but holds heat well.

We started cucumber, both squash mixes, and broccoli this last weekend.

I’ll try to contribute some kale seeds for next year, we had one plant survive all winter in a tiny pot (it volunteered there) and then bounce right back when we transplanted it a few weeks ago. We also have some perennial sea kale on the property and we’ve grown a bunch of different kale from local and chains over the years and we saved a bunch of seed last year.

The watermelon are running all over and it’s difficult to trace them to the mother plant but I’m thinking these yellow ones must be from the GTS pack because I didn’t purchase any varieties with a yellow rind (that I can remember anyways)

Starting to open up watermelon. Some are from the GTS Canadian seed share some are from seeds that I purchased:

Some are overripe and some under, I’m just learning how to judge their ripeness. I grew these in a greenhouse this year so as to collect seed and then next year hopefully I’ll have enough seed to experiment with them outside

That’s a nice harvest! My watermelons are still marble size; we’ll see if something works out before frost!

I saved a whole bunch of muskmelon seeds today to return to the polar muskmelon mix. They were mostly small, green fleshed melons.

The taste test was a thumbs up or thumbs down from a toddler lol (I tasted too, there were a couple of bland melons that I didn’t save any seed from).
