Yesterday I decided to bring together all my research on Common Knotgrass (Polygonum aviculare). I discovered that it is frequently mistaken for a culinary herb used in Vietnamese cuisine and I wanted to get word out there that it definitely wasn’t the same thing. Have a read and see what you think: Knotgrass or Not - by A. Potentilla - Urban Food Forest

If this is the same thing as what we call prostrate knotgrass, I love this plant. At the end of my driveway, it is green all season, and soft and cool on bare feet. I think an entire lawn of it would be wonderful, but it doesn’t seem to grow unless conditions are sufficiently harsh. So, I appreciate it in my driveway and some path edges. As far as eating it, considering its location near the road, it had never occurred to me to taste it. Maybe next year.

Yes that’s right, the other common name is Prostate Knotgrass. Common names can be confusing! If you want to, pot some up with some bad gravelly soil and it should do ok enough for you to sample some without contamination.
