I don’t remember where I saw this, but I had it in my calendar that there was going to be a community call the second Sunday of every month. I didn’t see any link or notes beyond that. Is there anything like that going on?
We had community calls for a while, but lately have put more effort into sponsoring webinars with guest speakers. If there’s enough interest, perhaps we could start them again. @Joseph_Lofthouse @julia.dakin what do you think?
I was working on starting calls on the discord for different time zones but it ended up being me and one other person for each day/time zone. Interest kind of sputtered out. There needs to be someone for each time zone to host their own I think. But if there isn’t enough people available at the same time it’s difficult.
Yes we should-
I would love to show up at a call that somebody else organizes and moderates ![]()
I’m fairly new here, but I have enjoyed the two Zoom calls that I was able to attend in the past year. I think it’s a good idea, but when summer comes full swing most of us will be busy in the garden (I know I will be) so getting a full audience of us together might be a bit of a challenge. I know some southern gardeners are probably already at the “busy stage” already.
In Utah, been working on planting and sowing nearly every day this week. It’s snuck up on us.
I am interested in doing some organizing or some such, but I figure I’ll wait a year since I’m brand new here, see how things go. I know what it’s like to overcommit.
I’ve pushed for an “apéro-PEPs’“ (like it would be “GTS-aperitif”) 6 months ago with my french group on the first Wednesday of every month at always same hour (8:30pm), and it works well without agenda or moderation. But we’re always from 5 to 10-15. With more than that moderation could be a necessity
Of course no drink needed
but that end up being interesting with loads of news and ideas exchanged freely. It’s also great as this informal way somehow permitted to the most new members to dare participate, dare exchange with the more experienced, which proved to be good to tackle both fascination and fears of “not understanding enough” to dare questioning options, methods, ask to reformulate. It’s also great for the more experienced growers who frequently talk too much jargon for others, to adapt, be more careful with their wording, explain more. We’ve learned a lot in this journey…
As I am traveling I couldn’t attend the 2 past ones but I know from messages it’s been 2 great sessions, so that’s cool : it’s not dependant on someone. The platform and the group being growing steadily, that’s also a way for the newbies to introduce themselves, and get to know the others simply. We get to know each others on a quite regular basis
Love this idea of an open room with no moderation, if we can make that work. We tried in in a Discord group and timezones and not enough people made it fizzle.
Here is a doodle with various times to see when is most accessible for most people, add best times for you (I have these in for next week, but is more to show best general repeating time).
And until then, here is an open zoom room anybody can join with a friend here (schedule in the chat- or propose an hour and/or a topic and let people know you’ll be there.

And if we need more of a rotating host type of situation (host can invite Joseph L or another guest to come chat and answer questions on a topic?) fill out the form indicating if you’re willing to host.
Based on the poll, the best time is 4 pm PT/7 pm ET, Monday. So– for now let’s do the first Monday of every month. The first one May 4th (time to put in our newsletter).
Nobody volunteered to be a rotating host, so for now it will be an open meeting. Based on our last effort at doing it this way, (wasn’t well attended) I’d love to see more organization in the next series…
What’s your ideas for making the calls somewhere you want to come every month? A specific topic?
Small group breakout rooms?
Maybe a specific topic every month? Although perhaps that would make engagement uneven, as people might only join for the topics they care about.
Perhaps having an agreed upon agenda for the calls would be good aswell, for example that the calls will start by discussing one topic before moving on to another. I mean for example “in todays call we will discuss [topic] and [topic]”
I’m going to attempt to message in discord whenever I have some time. See if people are online interested/available.
