Coolest Watermelon Seeds!

I just found the coolest watermelon seeds! Has anyone grown these or similar varieties?

They mention in the description they have heard of other varieties with similar traits of patterned/peeling seeds.

Thanks @suffling for introducing me to Uprising Seeds, I found a few interesting varieties!

There is also an orange flesh variety:

Nice! Very interesting seed and the information reads they are a good size for the refrigerator and have good flavors. Looks like a good addition to the grex. Will you be sending in seed for the watermelon mix? If so, that would put the mix into over 20 different varieties working towards a landrace for your garden. Did you request GTS seed for 2025 growing season?

If I have a decent watermelon year I will be sending some in! Last year was pretty rough but I was able send a small amount of watermelon.

I did, I have some of my gts seed already planted and will be getting more in the ground over the next few months!

Yes, glad to recieve your seed for the GTS mix. I still have an older mix of seed to plant, multiple varieties and flesh colors… last year was a bust for my melons. Planting this week, hoping we dont get the sneaky March frost and will get a plug tray started inside the greanhouse for a backup of plants. I prefer sowing directly into the ground, but having backups gives me hope something will grow…lol

Yeah I thought they were some kind of art thing when I first saw the photo.

I haven’t grown these. Some of my seed farming friends grow out seeds for Two Seeds in a Pod and they really like working with the owners and find they have great seeds and, more importantly, high standards of how they treat their employees/contractees. Do with that info what you will, I haven’t grown on contract for them yet but may reach out next season.

Yeah, my first thought was, “Wait, weren’t those carved?” If they actually grow in the fruit that way, wow, very cool.

I think it happens as the seeds dry. The thin black layer shrinks and cracks exposing the white layer below.

They look like tiny works of art.

These seeds look a bit like the seeds of some cushaw varieties. I haven’t encountered this myself yet. When C. argyrosperma seeds have this pattern, it’s I’ve seen it described as “crazed” as in “the surface of the seeds is crazed” or “there is crazing on the surface of the seeds”.

The old commercial variety Japanese Pie Pumpkin is named because the crazed seeds look a little like Japanese writing. PUMPKIN 'Japanese Pie' seeds – Boondie Seeds

Looks like it is probably the same effect just without the contrasting black on white of the watermelon seed.

I wonder if there are any noticable differences in germination or seed storage in seeds with this trait vs regular seeds.

Wow, that’s cool!

Yeah, I could see that being a mechanism that would cause those kinds of patterns. Good thinking!
