Cornuts are like Popcorn that doesn’t pop all the way & is instead toasted with oil to make a Nut like snack. Would these genetics pair well with Popcorn (Zea mays var. everta)?
I’ve seen many Varieties of Cornnut at the grocery store, in the Latin Foods Section & I’m wondering if these have been pretoasted because I’d love to incorporate them into a Cornnuts Landrace. The Famous Cornnuts were bred from Cuzco Corn to grow in California.
Are all these Pre-Toasted or do you have to Toast them at home? I’ve seen recipes saying you have to toast them meaning Viable seeds for planting but I need to confirm for each & Every Package I’ve seen at the grocery store. I Tried asking ChatGPT this question but I don’t think it fully comprehends this yet.
I’ve also seen Purple Corn & Peruvian Mote Corn but I don’t think these pop like Cornuts. I don’t think they are toasted.
YES Thank you! That’s what I Needed to know. Now I can Start my landrace!
Interesting… so Even if Shape & Dimensions were exactly the same but just kernel doubled in size, it would pop like cornnut instead? What about Mushroom Popcorn vs Butterfly Popcorn? Both Pop well but differently but are about the same size just different shaped kernel that Pops differently.
Wait how does sweet corn toast? I thought you Roasts it instead.
I agree. They also look pretty decent to me for grocery seed. I bet you’d get a lot of viable seed from every one of those bags. If it were me and I were just selecting by guts on those bags for a corn nut type corn I’d probably get the maiz cancha Montana and chulpe corn.
Assuming by guts you mean what you think will work, Cancha Montana & Chulpe Corn sound nice. I was wondering if the daylight cycle might be a bit off, knowning country of origin might help here.
Thank you for further Assurance! I’m doing a series on every single seed you can grow from grocery store + Incorporating These into my landrace. It’s nice to hear every seed will be viable as Popcorn from grocery store definitely was! I’ve also heard mote corn was also somewhat poppable but it’s not used like cornuts right?
