Developing my overwintering cabbage landrace

Only one of my overwintering cabbage plants came back this spring, and it is so weak (not to mention not having another plant nearby for pollination) that I will not be getting any seed this year. But, it is time to plant for another try! I will be planting earlier this year, and hoping for better weather. I think it was actually the erratic spring weather that did in the plants; (I know most of my overwintering celery were still alive as of the beginning of March, but repeated rounds of cold and warm weather have now killed every one of them). Also, I think the mulch over the cabbages retained too much water; I will be using an airier mulch next fall. And, come March, I will remove all the mulch and use a cover of some sort to protect them through the wild spring weather.
