Behind my 9 to 5 grows a bunch of dog rose that i want to grow at home for the rose hips. Ideally i would have had my hori hori with me but i used my cheap serrated blade pocket knife to dig out some root matter instead and almost snapped the blade.
Does anyone have a multi purpose gardening “EDC” they carry all day every day religiously, not just while working in the garden? You never know where you’re gonna find something you wanna propagate back home.
I’m looking into a slightly bigger fixed blade beater knife but thought it might be worth checking here for ideas.
The only tool I carry on me is a folding knife.
I keep a set of pruners, a hori hori, a small shovel, and all kinds of various tools and potentially useful materials in a pack in my vehicle.
I also put an old pair of pruners in my wifes vehicle.
I have a Gerber multi tool that can do most of the stuff I need when propping, but haven’t ever gone so far as to dig with it. I love the idea of a car carry kit and may need to outfit the truck I’m picking up next week with such a kit.
If you carry a backpack then a hori knife and Felco pruners are feasible EDC. If you have a car, those army surplus folding shovels (trenching tool) are very functional. I would also include some contractor bags and ziploc bags for transporting collected plants or soil.
If you have a pickup truck then there’s really no reason not to carry a cheap full sized shovel, a roll of contractor bags and some five gallon buckets, or trugs, with you.
