So if someone wanted to get in touch with everyone within their state they can.
The tidbit that I was referencing was about someone mentioning that they wanted to get in touch with other growers/gardeners within the state of Texas. There could be for example a:
“Texas Community Page”
(I would also love a: “Florida Community Page.” To talk about everything landrace, even gardening related, seed swaps, trading cuttings, building a small regional community to help with expanding FL based projects, and seeing what everyone else is doing within our particular state.)
I just don’t know how to create something like that on here
It will probably be more beneficial to have regional pages.
Texas has at least 5 different regions within the state due to size and range of climates. We range from hardiness zone 6b to 10a. We also have a wild range of soil types and precipitation averages across those hardiness zones.
Other forums I’ve most often seen North Texas grouped with Oklahoma. The Gulf region will have more in common with other gulf states. Far West Texas would probably group with New Mexico.
I’m sure states like California will be in a similar situation.
Midwest states would likely group together. Appalachia would likely be another region.
I’m not sure what the best breakdown would be, I just know I’m more environmentally similar to the majority of Oklahoma and other surrounding states than to most other parts of Texas. (And closer by distance also)
If we had the ability to do an advanced search by things like hardiness zone, soil type, etc. that could be helpful. Especially for people who may fall into microclimatic pockets within an area and may have more similar environment or selection pressures to another region across the country (or across the world).
What might also be cool would be to have a radius search by zip code.
Good point about regional areas probably being a better breakdown. As a Utahn, I tend to expect seeds from anywhere in the Four Corners region to be well-suited for my climate.
