Sad to return to Bulgaria and see that the cold spell earlier in the month wiped out my mallow plants.
I’ve scattered the seed all around the garden so hopefully I’ll get plenty of plants in the spring!

Hopefully there will be lots of plants for you soon! I love the little seedlings — they’re so distinctive, with those tiny, cute little heart-shaped leaves.

Low was -11 C, with ice and snow on the ground and sub-freezing temperatures for over a week. Not thaaaat cold, but clearly too cold for the mallows. Even the dandelions look sick and yellow. My garlic and one surviving walking onion have disappeared. The nettles and lemon balm have sprouted again, just in time for the next cold spell! Gotta love them!
Huh! I think my common mallow tends to survive when it gets to that low a temperature, but I could be wrong. Maybe the tops of yours died, but they’ll grow back from the roots in spring? Maybe keep a casual eye out and see if you notice that. That would be neat!

I hope the mallows will regrow, that would be excellent! I’m sure to get some new plants growing from seed, too.
I think the issue was the prolonged cold period and the hard freeze. The temperature stayed well below freezing for over a week. My UK mallows are fine with short freezes, but it’s never less than about -5 and the freezes only last a few days in my part of the UK. These plants weren’t in peak condition to start with, which won’t have helped. It was a severely droughty summer and they got no watering. I was amazed they survived at all.
I’m also thinking maybe these plants grew from UK seed I scattered in the spring. They won’t have been selected for the colder winters here.
Oh, I can see prolonged cold weather being a big deal. It’s almost always above freezing in the daytime here. I can’t remember a time of an entire week staying below freezing both day and night, though I could be remembering wrongly.
