Oikos doesn’t usually sell seeds in less than bulk sizes, but he’s offering these for smaller plantings. I hope that if you have the space, you’ll get them. It has some very exciting crosses in the mix and is perfect for a landrace plum. Check it out.
Is anyone willing to keep seeds until there is an opportunity to get the across the Atlantic? I might be interested but cannot get them to Europe directly.
I’m not sure. My goal is to plant them so I can harvest seeds in 3-5 years and continue it on to others. It would be great to have a few other people who can commit long-term to producing seeds.
I bought some, thanks to your post, and I plan to do the same.
We could also do our own Tree Seed Swap in the autumn? I have plums from old plumtrees from the Old Orchard here, one is very interesting variety (early, sweet, big, juicy but not keeping long), and three varieties of peaches, two varieties of cherry etc.
Yes. I suggest makkng a thread with offers in the European seed swap category. We could have more woody plants in the seed train as well.
That would be really exciting to do. I feel like I cannot contribute much to such a swap since many of the fruits I grow here do not do well further north, like citrus, some types of mulberries, figs. I do have a few plums seeds this year, but not enough to share. We get loads of plums but lose anywhere from 80-100 percent from cucurlio. I’m hoping this diversity mix might come up with some innovative ways to overcome this pest.
Regardless, maybe we can do some organizing to connect more people who have fruit tree seeds to swap this fall. I’ll talk to more people.
I looked into the possibility of getting some of this seed to Europe and found that there might be problems with getting Prunus maritima to Europe. For example, Sheffield Seed do not send beach plum to Europe - no explanation given, but worth looking into. The species is on the continent though, e.g. Zoetewei in Belgium sells beach plum. So it’s not like bringing hybrid hazelnut from America to Europe (which you should never do).
Thanks for sharing, Lowell!
I bought some seeds and will report back about their progress here in the Portland, OR area. If all goes well, I’d be happy to share seeds in the future.
Thanks for letting us know. I think even if Oikos sells out, we can at least source most of the species again. Although, Oikos has already done selection on his plums. Regardless, something will work out.
Awesome! I’m going to purchase some Prunus mexicana from Sheffield’s. If you or anyone else in this thread are interested in some seeds, I’d be happy to pass some on. I may also have some Bruce plum seeds coming in the mail from someone on a plum forum.
