Okra Adaptation Project for Northern Climates – Quebec, Canada

I’m very happy to be participating in this okra adaptation project for a third year.

This season, I started seeds indoors in early March. The results were mixed, as the seedlings went through several stresses, including sunburn and excess watering. In the end, the strongest plants survived.

In early June, I transplanted these seedlings outdoors, with an estimated survival rate of about 30%. I also made direct sowings in the field in order to compare both methods.

This year, I added compost and installed drip irrigation to help prepare for possible drought conditions, like the one we experienced in 2025, with roughly two months and only around 20 mm of rain. The trial is taking place in very sandy soil with very little organic matter.

So far, we’ve had a cold and rainy start to the season.

Thank you for watching, and see you soon!

Roby
