Perennial rose mallow - hibiscus moscheutos x - okra pods - spinach too?

That was my plant that was being discussed. Still waiting on those pods to ripen!

I’ve been following your work with these hibiscus and I’m very interested to see if you are able to get any crosses.

I recently collected some seed from a local H. moscheutos population I found.

There’s a species native to south asia I would love to try to cross with okra. It’s called Abelmoschus angulosus and is the only Abelmoschus member with any cold hardiness traits. I put in a request with Sheffield’s and they pretty quickly responded that they would be unable to source it.

This hardy hibiscus colony has the largest seed pods of any I have seen in among the perennials of the Hibiscus genus. These plants are growing outside of a native plant nursery. I was interested to notice that the Rose Mallows that are for sale have much smaller pods.

These plants have been growing outside the nursery for several years. I am grateful they were willing to share some seeds when I explained my interest. I would sure like to have some growing in my garden with seed pods this size.
