I have an interesting thing happening in my garden. I planted black and white Lima beans 3 years ago. Last year the harvest was mostly black beans. This year some are purple one the same plants. I also planted Christmas Lima beans in another area. Most of the harvest is a pale Christmas but there are so many variations of colors on one plant. Some are white with a purple vein on the inside with speckles. Some are red. Some are purple and some are purple with rust stripes. I’ll send some to the group.
Awesome! Definitely take some pictures, I gotta see
I would love to but don’t see any option on this discussion. Since that post we have found so many variations.
The little “up” arrow in the typing box is for “upload” - you can use it to post pictures.
I crossed two varieties of limas a couple of years ago and am now getting lots of different colors and patterns. This year I added Christmas limas and can hardly wait to see the results! They do all taste pretty much the same (which is fine, as far as I’m concerned).
wow! That is awesome! Fully violet purple seeds like that are a bit uncommon (Thanks to the incredible phenonom that is hybridization).
Do they taste any different compared to the other lime bean colors (like how different seed colors do for Phaseolus vulgaris)? I’ve only ever tried white lima & immature green lima (Which is the white but immature).
Interesting… so there is no preference to select a certain color? Hmm… do the smaller andean types taste different from the smaller middle american/mexican types?
I have made a combination of Limas together. They all taste the same but I have not tried to do a side by side comparison. I love looking at all the variation.
