What does it all mean? How are we to understand which of those 160 would be useful? For me all of that info is basically an alien language. [Edit: I finally understand it now]
Also do you know how many different kinds of seeds we can ask for in one time? And, is that like a limit for the whole year, or…? I would love to try to grow soy beans here in the UK. I already have a few varieties from Hokkaidō to try, no idea is any of them will make it. I thought perhaps acquiring some more from them could be a good idea if they have any that are better adapted for the UK, and maybe even try to make some crosses with them and the Hokkaidō ones next year to start a hybrid swarm…
I’ve ordered from Secret Seed Cartel in France, they don’t have landraces yet but they have some very solid varieties, and they carry the Karen Olivier tomatoes which tend to be exserted in my garden.
@Justin I found it helpful to add ‘advanced search criteria’ and then select Improvement Level > Equal To > … and then chose something like… Traditional Landrace or Breeding/Research Material or Advanced/Improved Cultivar
That narrows down the list quite a lot and then you can also search by country of origin and can tick the box that says ‘With Images’. The images also have a scale so you can get an idea of size.
Then there’s a part of the checkout process where you have to state your research purpose. I would maybe mention an affiliation with the “Going to Seed” nonprofit or Joseph/Joseph’s book and that you are growing the seeds for educational purposes (etc etc).
Other than that, it is easy. I asked for / received 10 traditional fava bean landraces last spring. I received them in about 3 days so I was really happy.
Ah thanks, as it happens I just worked that out this evening before seeing your reply, while searching for peas - they also have many wild ones you can find using that filter too! For soya actually they don’t have any under that landrace category, they’re all breeding lines. I should edit my above comment since I spent many hours learning about soya breeding history and now have a much better understanding of what their soybeans are about.
Yeah maybe I should have mentioned ‘going to seed’ - I did think of that so searching this forum to see if I could find out what ‘going to seed’ was and actually I couldn’t find anything, so I basically have no idea what it is! I think maybe I had been inspired to do that after maybe you mentioning it in the past? Anyway, since I couldn’t find anything about that, instead I mentioned myself as a graduate of the landrace course, and laid out my intentions. No idea if it will work but I do think my intentions are aligned with their stated intentions, so, I hope so! I’m glad you got yours, and I hope they do well for you!
I bought some of the varieties and they are doing a good job preserving them. Some varieties that I found interesting. There is a watermelon variety with green seeds to make candied fruit. Melon with fuzzy skin. Dry farming melon and tomatoes seeds.

@Ruediger and @ChrisF : what would be the keywords in german to find landraces? I know that “mischung” helps to find mixes, useful for creating grexes… (In french landrace is “variété-population” ou “variété de pays”, mix is “mélange”)
“Landsorte” would be a literal translation. And when searching for diverse seeds “Mischung”, “Mix”, “Populationssorte” (mostly for grains). You could also try “bunt”, “vielfalt” or “divers”.
Great idea. Just watched this video on their perenial Kale. That’s exactly what i wanted to do a couple of years back. Mix a lot of them, but they’re sold out all the time! He stands in a jungle of them.
I’ve ordered the perennial Kale seeds and other stuff. Stop sending me seed companies, you’re ruining my finances!

Hugo, I have a very diverse perennial kale grex - if I didn’t add it last time, I will for sure add it this time around. It’s based on Chris Homanics Purple Tree Collard x Daubenton x lots of other perennial kales. And then selected once here in Denmark for hardiness (so F2).
Yes there’s genetics from that one in it. Some of that genetics will disappear where I am, I suspect, as PTC is less cold-tolerant (the person in the video is a well-known perennial kale grower from California, where they grow well).
