Well, if you see anything in the pictures that looks interesting, PM the person sending it!
Oh, man, a stomach bug! That’s awful. Those royally, royally stink.
In case it’s helpful for you (or anybody else here!) to know, you may be able to ask your mail carrier to grab a package by your door by leaving a note in your mailbox that says something like, “Will you please pick up the package by my door?” (and then raise the flag on the mailbox so they know there’s something for them to pick up).
Not an option for people in apartment buildings or whatever, but it may be helpful for anyone who has a private mailbox to send and receive mail. My mail carrier suggested to me that I do that, and I now do it all the time — it saves me sooooooooo much time and effort going to the post office! I just print out the postage with Pirateship, put the package outside, and leave a note for my mail carrier to pick up the package in my mailbox, and they pick it up, and it goes. I am so grateful my mail carrier suggested it to me!
For anyone who doesn’t have their own private mailbox, I’m pretty sure the USPS website lets you request a pickup from the local mail carrier, and they don’t charge anything for the service. I know someone else who does that all the time. So as long as you can print out the postage at home (which is usually cheaper anyway), being able to avoid leaving the house should be possible. Definitely helpful during those times when one’s desire (or ability) to leave the house is very low!
Well, virtual hugs to you, @NotFaeGardener. I hope that Murphy departs from your home soon, and takes that no-good law of his with him. ![]()
In our case, we have neighborhood boxes, so we can’t just leave a request in the mailbox. And because there are two houses with my number in the neighborhood (one on ST, one on CT) we are forever having problems with delivery and pickup because they’ll go the wrong house. Last time I tried, the carrier went to the OTHER “my address” and knocked when they didnt’ see a package… since they didn’t get an answer, they just left. So, I’ve learned not to trust anything but taking the box directly to the post office in our small town and watching it scanned in.
Oh, yeesh! That’s an unfortunate situation. I’m sorry that happens at your house. ![]()
That is frustrating! We run a Lego business from our home, so we set lots of USPS pickups. And we’ve had to educate several carriers about how this works.
I’m so excited to see the box again! Of all the tree seeds I got last time, they were refrigerated and I recently potted them up. And I’m seeing a few sprouts! And as I harvested in the past few months, I thought about making sure I had enough to share. I didn’t get myself in shape to send seeds to GTS, maybe next year.
Ooooh! Which tree seeds are you seeing sprouts from currently? ![]()
Rosa Canina
Tea Hibiscus
Blackberry (my own seed)
Pear, plum (could be American Wild Grape, they got put in the same pot/bin) or could be hawthorn, I forgot to number/ mark these bins
And its only been about a week or just over. ![]()
Nice! ![]()
Which are the ones you’re still waiting for? I’m curious about all the rest of the ones you’ve sown!
Here is the run down.
Hyacinth: but the seeds seemed largely rotted, but still giving them a try
Jujubi, peach (had roots!), Kentucky coffee, cherries, Rosa rugosa, and apricot.
I wrapped each set in damp paper towel, put in a ziplock and labeled with plant and date, finally piled in the back of the fridge. After 3ish months, put them in dirt! They are all in “greenhouse” type containers.
My back patio is covered and south facing. And we’ve had nice mild weather.
I’ve also got lemon and orange seeds potted up, those I got from mandarin oranges and lemons I purchased to cook with or eat.
I’m very curious about when jujube seedlings will first start to show thorns (if they have them). I’m wanting to start a thornless jujube landrace, and I’m thinking it would be neat to collect seeds from thornless mothers and cull out anything that has thorns (probably from the father).
If I happen to get any jujubi trees, I’ll let you know about thorns! I haven’t paid attention to what has thorns and what doesn’t. Honestly, I was surprised when my lemon tree started showing thorns. Things I didn’t know. #ignorancetax
Ha ha ha ha! “Ignorance tax” is a good way to put it! Yeah, I’ve been surprised by things I’ve bought that have had thorns before. I now have five gooseberry varieties, all of which were optimistically described by the nursery as “thornless” . . . and none of them were . . . ![]()
I’m gonna keep them to evaluate them when they finally fruit, though. I’ll compare them with my two varieties of jostaberries, both of which are thornless. If the gooseberries are better, I’ll cross them with the jostas to see if I can get jostas that taste just as good and are actually thornless. (Well, actually, I’m sure I’ll start making those crosses before I even taste the first year of fruit, because . . . why not?
)
The box has landed! Just in time for an snowstorm to hit after I got in the house. Whew!
Whoever organized this is an angel. There’s so much in here! What a generous group! I’m going to do my best to get through the box and my seed collection, take a couple things, but mostly add from my stash.

to all of you!
@Iamadesertcreature You’re up next! Get ready! ![]()
Woo hoo! I agree — receiving the box is always so much fun! ![]()
Hee hee, I’ll gladly accept your designation of me as an angel.
But the reason it’s so wonderful is because of everybody in the community! Everyone here has contributed to building such a wonderful community. ![]()
GROUP HUG!! ![]()
Huzzah! Ready and eager!
And I actually managed to put together some homegrown molokhia seeds in sufficient quantity to add to the box.
Next year I’m hoping that the cotton will do better. Harvested enough to plant next year, though. Adaptations proceeding. One step forward, several "Oh no, NOW what?!"s back…
-hugs Emily back- So glad this is still going!
(Laugh.) What a fantastic description! ![]()
What does the molokhia taste like? I’ve been very curious about that plant!
Och, alas that I cannot say! At least not yet. I planted some as part of a rather motley mix. I didn’t know it had grown at all, since my plant ID apps all returned a result of ‘jute mallow’. I didn’t pursue the matter further, being more taken up with disasters. Don’t ask me which one, this year seems to have been an unending sequence of them. It wasn’t until the seed pods matured and I started poking at them that the penny finally dropped. I’m very good at being mistaken, but even I couldn’t miss those turquoise seeds. ![]()
Got through the box last night. What a delightful assortment.
I was able to add a few things.
I have some pomelo and pomegranate seeds to add and Melanzane eggplant seeds that need a couple days drying if I add them. If nobody is interested in either, then I can ship the box out as soon as I get the next address. Thoughts?
I badly need some eggplant seeds, actually. All my attempts this year to start them failed. Happy to wait a tad longer. ![]()
These should be dry by tomorrow, so I’ll put some in a baggie. I also have another bag of eggplant seeds that are a random mix; I can grab some of those for you too. ![]()
Need anything else in particular?
