Serendipity Seed Swap! (US)

That is a ton of saved seeds! How very productive!

All they all tomato and pepper seeds? I glanced at the photo, and that’s what I noticed.

Yep. Mostly tomato seed. The only-Goingtoseed tomato seed is going to the big seed collection for next year’s packets. I have a ton of tomatillos to pick and process. I’ll save some seed for the box and most will go to the big collection.

I’ve also saved some arugula and nasturtium seed but not enough to share. Actually I’m not sure my nasturtium seed is viable, I picked a bunch of fallen seed below the plants. I need to pick seeds that are ready to fall to make sure I get some saved as back up. Though I’m sure plenty will come back where they are next year with how many they make :joy:

I wanted to have a ton of borage seed to share but mine was so successful that it all collapsed on itself and was taking over some of the tomatoes. Next year I’m planting it as a border in the yard!

I should have plenty of marigold and chamomile seed too.

Edit- I am over tomatillos. I don’t like them and they don’t excite me to just grow them. I’ll be sending the majority of the seed in. Keep a little back for the box and put last year’s seed in the box. So if you want tomatillo seed I’ll be putting a ton in.

Oh my, this is exciting! I need to get my seed saving act together.

Hi there,

@EmilyMarthaSorensen can I please be added to the bottom of the list?

It’s been awhile. We recently moved into our own house/property, and we are looking to start gardening at our new place

Congratulations! :tada: Does your new place have a different climate you need to get used to, or will most of your landraces and perennials be well-suited to it already?

I have added you to the bottom of the list! I hope you will find lots of awesome stuff there.

Thank you!

We moved one of the next city over but we are still in the same growing zone, 9A, it’s a similar climate but has sandier soil, no bodies of water, and slightly drier than Gainesville.

I can PM you so that we can talk more, and not take away from the Seed Swap Box thread.

I’m assuming that the box is on its way to me. Am I correct?

As usual, super excited to dig in and to add my own.

Happy, busy fall to all!

@Ash325, have you sent the box? It’s been over two weeks since you were sent the address, so ought to be sent by now.

Oh my, I am so sorry! I put the box in my van and completely forgot about it:woman_facepalming:t3:I will absolutely get it sent out. I do apologize again!

Well, I’m glad we reminded you, then!

Hoping to get that box soon!

@Ash325, have you sent the box? It has now been eighteen days since you said you would get it sent out soon. I really hope it didn’t get lost.

I’m sorry, I had more peach and apricot pits to add! :see_no_evil_monkey: Its not lost, I just dropped it at the post office. It’s on its way. I do apologize again, thank you for your patience

Thank you, @Ash325.

What can you tell me about those apricot pits? Freestone? Sweet? When do they flower and when are their fruits ripe? I am very curious now.

Hi, I’m new here! :waving_hand:

Just wanted to say the whole idea of the serendipity seed box has changed my world, and I’m so excited by this idea. I’m already thinking of how I could start a local community version of the serendipity box, maybe like a local, traveling seed-library.

I won’t be eligible for being added to the list for a while (in online communities, I don’t tend to post much, I usually lurk and comment), but I hope someday I will be able to participate - and until then, I’ll work hard on growing lots of good seed to contribute.

So far, I have black-eyed peas (grown from my pantry), Maggie x Provider bush bean grex, and Lofthouse landrace dry beans to share.

Pictures and more details about the beans here:

I have other seeds (like cilantro, Wasabina mustard seeds, etc.) I harvested this year but I don’t have enough yet to share with lots of people.

My red aztec spinach (Chenopodium berlandieri) seems to be producing lots of mature seed, but it hasn’t dried down, and I haven’t harvested or processed it yet.

Hi, poppy! Welcome to the forum!

Making your own local community version is a great idea. Go for it!

If you have some things to share but aren’t eligible for the Serendipity Seed Swap box yet, you can contribute those to the Going to Seed community grexes! Guidelines here:

The grexes are wonderful, too. There are quite a few ways to share seeds in this excellent community!

The grexes usually become available to order sometime in spring. The seeds are free; you just pay for the postage. Everyone who packs them up and mails them is a volunteer. Almost all of the 2026 seed grexes are sold out now, but it looks there may still be some Summer Mix pepo squash grexes left:

Just in case that interests you!

Yes! I joined this Discourse to learn more about the GTS project so I can contribute (and if I feel I can contribute seed back, hopefully receive some seeds and grow them out).

Once I joined I found your Serendipity Seed Box and became obsessed, lol.

I might wait a few weeks to send seed until I educate myself better on seed saving standards (e.g. I read through the contributing seeds guide for cowpeas and saw you should freeze your harvested seed for three days to kill off weevils and their eggs!), and to finish harvesting from my garden so that I can send all the seeds I have to offer in one go.

I’m also worried seeds like Chenopodium berlandieri or from pokeweed might be unwanted, so I also wanted to get more of a read on what was worth sending and sharing (and what wasn’t).

It also sounds like I have a lot to learn on reducing shipping costs, you mentioned Pirateship as a way to reduce costs and I need to look into that.

I’ve been lurking for a few days and already it’s clear you have done so much for this community, not just all the work you put into the Serendipity Seed Box, but also welcoming people like me and all the time and effort you pour into this community - I just wanted to say thank you and say you’re really inspiring! :heart_hands:

Obsession is fun!

Sure, make sure you read the guidelines to see what’s welcome and what’s not. If the guidelines don’t say otherwise, I suspect you can contribute basically anything to the Fukuoka grex. But do read the guidelines, because I may be wrong.

Pirateship is great! I totally recommend them.

Oh, thank you for your kind words! That’s very sweet of you to say! I’m obsessive, so doing things that make this community better is a joy.
