Someone asked about crossing attempts between these two species and i decided to try it again this year. I have some fertile seed potato seedlings growing, and at a family members house is a wild I. pandurata. This summer I took a random cutting from one of the sweet potato seedlings and put it in a pot next to the wild pandurata. The sweet potato seedlings are all first season so I don’t know which are more fertile of may even be self compatible. So far I’ve attempted to pollinate pandurata with batatas pollen with no success, although I found an undeveloped embryo in one. But the vine at my mom’s house is setting a decent amount of seed. It must be either selfing or setting hybrid seed. Some of the flowers didn’t form seed and some aren’t fully developed, which could indicate they aren’t selfed. But it’s been dry too so maybe it’s stress. We will see.
