The US-Canada Seed Swap (and the red tape we cut!) 🍉🥦

Have you ever tried growing a variety adapted to a completely different region just to see what happens? Let us hear the story! @anna (Going to Seed) recently helped coordinate a cross-border seed swap that required navigating some USDA restrictions. :watermelon::broccoli:

Clint (:round_pushpin:Amery, Wisconsin) and Evalisa (:round_pushpin:Thunder Bay, Ontario) are growers in our farmer support program. Clint wanted to try watermelons adapted by Evalisa and she was excited to try Clint’s sprouting broccoli. Shipping the broccoli north to Canada was easy, but getting the watermelon seeds south required a wild detour through a San Francisco USDA inspection station using our Small Lots import permit.

Some words shared by Evalisa & Clint:
Evalisa (Ontario): “In the tasting, yours was one of the favourites. I am blown away by the wild huge white flowers on some of them.”
Clint (Wisconsin): “Watermelons are throwing out their vines… Plan to start a little on the late side this year to just push to see who can make ripe seed in time. Excited to see/taste the results!”

Id love to open a subcategory within the seed swap section for anyone interested in trading seeds across the border! Sounds like it is trickier to ship into the USA but I’d personally love to swap with growers nearby. I live right along the border so anyone below me would have a very similar climate, weather patterns, and probably pests too. Anyone else interested…?
