What is this legume?

Can anyone identify this legume?

I realize it’s not a lot to go off of

One of my plant apps thinks it might be Mucuna pruriens, but I grew that last season and the seeds were very different in appearance. Though if I remember right the hilum was similarly pronounced

The Mucuna looks to have a distinctively ridged pod.

I was wondering if it was some kind of red kidney bean. More straight than kidney shaped though.

Maybe it’s time to just plant these and figure it out then. I was initially worried it might end up being a shrub or tree I didn’t want as the stem is pretty woody, but I can just put them somewhere I won’t lose track of them :seedling:

I look forward to seeing what they turn out to be.

They remind me of a Vigna species, perhaps in subgenus ceratrotopsis? Seed Hilums are a good way to ID species/genus

It’s Wysteria seed from our place. I am not an expert and did not plant it, but I believe it’s American on account of the more compact flower clusters, fewer leaflets, and later blooming.

I didn’t label it when we collected the seed, thinking nothing else we grow looks like it so I wouldn’t get it mixed up with anything

Really!? It’s hard to find pitures of Wysteria seed. So far I found this article on how to grow wisteria from seed & your mysterious legume doesn’t look like it.

Here’s the how to grow wisteria seed link : How to Grow Your Japanese Wisteria From Seeds | Spirit of Japan

Here’s what wisteria seed look like. I don’t know how different looking different species of wisteria are from these seeds.

Are you 100% sure your Mysteria seed is a Wisteria? Cuz to me, your mysterious legume looks a lot like it belongs to the Phaseoleae Tribe & not the Wisterieae Tribe.

Can you take a better picture of the hilum (Seed Attachment point)?

It’s kind of hard to tell if your seed has a nutsack & balls above the hilum. To me It looks a lot like a Vigna species but I want to be sure it’s not a Phaseolus species either or some other genus entirely.

Label not needed if you know how to ID legume seeds by the hilum, by their seeds you shall know them.
