Starting the Chives topic 2024 GTS mix
Chive seeds germinated very well and more quickly than some other chive seed I planted at the same time (garlic chives).
However, when I set the pots outside to transition to transplanting, the GTS chive seedlings got grazed by an animal, probably a deer. The garlic chives did not get grazed, and in prior years I’ve never had a problem with deer grazing my other chives so I didn’t worry about protecting them.
I almost want to call it a failure. But there are a few of the GTS plants that look like they just might bounce back. So I guess there’s a glimmer of hope.
Mine came up well but we had a hard freeze. Looks I lost all but 4.
I am starting the GTS chives in a few weeks, as soon as the heatwave is over. Ill plant half of the seed for our fall season, and the other half in the spring during late February to early March. Im hoping this fall planting by letting them overwinter, they will produce some seed.
Im happy to grow chives and dehydrate the harvest so I have plenty to utilize for the year.
These are garlic chives that survived the summer, hoping they go to seed.
Just a sad little update that my chives have definitely failed. I do want to try again next year and give them better protection from deer etc. Also, I think that this year because of the weird weather, the deer were more desperate and were eating things that they usually leave alone.
