Amaranth grain

Yeah, the grain i planted was light tan and the grain i harvested was dark golden. It’s interesting to see how the colors change as they adapt.

I grew a small plot of amaranth with a few seeds I got from the european serendipity seed swap , and I don’t know when to harvest them. I think they are very late, due to lack of heat during the whole summer and I wonder when I can cut them and have them finish curing hanging in the barn…

Personnally I thresh a part into my hands to see if there is some seeds ready, around end of septembet. If so I cut the higher part of the plants and let them dry on some cloth.
Probably this would be best hanging. Of course the more aerated the better.
Then threshing becomes very easy.

I’ve brought 10 new strains this year, all giants, 2 a bit late (one still not ready, the other harvested last friday). All bought from deaflora.de . 4 or 5 different species. Will have seeds to share in our seed train.

so they don’t change color when they mature ? (I mean like quinoa, they turn dark when they are ready)

Ok I will try that next time we have a dry day.

Probably some, but I have most strains purely white and a few purely black. I haven’t seen changes in colours of those. But could be.
My main signal is when the seeds start detaching by just clapping gently my hands with a head in between. Then drying mode to get the others maturing

I also grew opopeo this year, for being neglected it did well and the leaves tasted good raw, pretty mild flavor. Planning on adding a few more varieties this year. I definitely have some weed amaranth around now I’m wondering if it crossed in. I chewed on some of the seeds they had a pleasant flavor as well.

Opeopo seed I panned in front of fan inside tonight and made a mess. The dried flower smells nice I wonder if that would have a use like tea.

Well with the Red ornamental cultivars, the flowers are boiled into a dye. It probably could be used as a tea or at least a food colorant. I might not have much flavor tho as a tea. It’s a trait I wanted to explore in Amaranth breeding.
Altho the leaves could also be used to achieve similar results. I’m just wondering if you could also breed more concentrated Amaranth flowers to turn Amaranth into a Broccoli!?
