Landrace Breeding Subtropical Quinoa- the crucial first step

This week’s farm post is up and I am really proud of the results I have to share today. This is a great example of the importance of finding the right crop genetics to get a landrace breeding project off the ground.
I have grown a fair range of quinoa genetics before, but couldnt find strains adapted to my latitude in circulation. Quinoa’s equitorial cousin (huauzontle) looks like being the missing key to my future breeding program.

This is really exciting, thanks for sharing. Can you post close-up photos of the unwashed seeds?

I have had some drying tree spinach/giganteum plants from last year that need threshing, I’m going to try washing and eating them, has anyone tried eating those?

Here is a close up with a house key for scale.

I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading your blog post. The writing style is very pleasant to read and the topic is of course very interesting! I was quite jealous of these beautiful, gigantic seedheads!
