Any way to tell moschata and pepo seedlings apart?

I made an error and planted a few moschata seeds in place with some pepos - not that I have any issue with purity but I can only fit the bush types pepos where I sowed them. Any way for me to figure out who’s who before they start to get large?

Moschata tend to be more fuzzy with rounded leaves whereas pepos have more commonly pointy and edged leaves. However, the first true leaves might not be the best indication and there is variance within those species. I can’t remember having fuzzy pepos, but leaf shapes do vary.

Out of those I’d say from top to bottom, 3th, 5th, 6th and 8th are moschata, but the others are also a little too small to say if they are certainly pepos. At least the top 2 seem to have more edged leaves.

Thanks for your reply! I wonder if I should just let them get a bit larger before thinning then? They seem to be growing very fast despite being extremely crowded…

I never thin my squashes. I way oversow them and then let them decide who lives and dies. If they can’t survive being crowded, that’s so sad for them. If they can, their children will let me do the same thing to them next year, and I’ll get more fruits in the same space. Muah ha ha ha ha!

This is pretty much my approach with everything, including fruit tree seedlings. But do keep in mind that I have way too much bright sunlight and not nearly enough water, so that’s a good approach for my particular growing conditions. If you have more growing space, more water, or less sunlight, you may very well prefer to do something different.
