I got squash seed from @Logan this year to grow out. The variety is called Rugosa friulana. On the seed packets in Italy, they call them zuchetta and mark them C. moschata. Vivi tells me her Rugosa friulana crosses with pepo and believes the variety is actually just a C. pepo. The seed she gave me were supposedly a Rugosa friulana x unnamed pepo.
When I look at the fruit of Rugosa friulana online, the fruits look similar to warted crookneck pepos. The seed I have in front of me look a lot like pepo too. Those of you who know your botany, what say you?
I’ve spent a few hours looking at different photos of this variety online because I was interested in the same question. I suggest looking at the flowers and leaves when you are forming your impression. They look like C. pepo flowers and leaves to me.
Edit: I’m so interested because I am attracted to wild and primitive squash types. I was hoping it would turn out to be moschata, but it does still seem to me like an early domestic line for pepo ssp ovifera.
I feel more confident about it being a pepo, reading your posts, thanks.
@VeggieSavage - I’m in Europe, so trading seed across the Atlantic is a bit difficult at the moment. I haven’t tasted the fruit yet, but the friend I got it from it is one of her favorites.
