This is Clint Freund of Cultivating The Commons. A small seed company in northern WI, USA. We grow many things wholesale for companies and our small packet company. We’ve always been interested in Bio-regionally adapted seed and this project will definitely enbolden that ethos. This year we’re attempting a grow-out of over 20 varieties of Sprouting Brassica olerecea as part of GOing To Seeds grant process. We’re searching for plants with low vernalization needs and ability to withstand continental heat and temp swings as well as various diseases that afflict Mediterrenean crops in our region. Should be interesting!!!
The 2024 Sprouting B. Olerecea is up and running. Time to thin out slow germinators and punky guys. The GRIN assession, despite the first packet looking like trash(!), seems to be pulling through very well! THe rest of the packets were pretty decent overall. Excited to have them in the mix this year. It should be a fairly diverse but Euro-centric mix. There will be some asian and brazilian strains that’ll contribute interesting traits to the mix.
Broccoli Grex is moving ahead greatly!! My brussel sprout seed crop wrapped up RIGHT on time as the broccolis started to button up!! Just had to nip a few flowers from early chinese types.
I’ve attached pics of the many varieties and types, we should have a radical amount of crossing this year. I plant to top some so late bloomers have a chance to cross in nice. Crossing my fingers that’ll be helpful!!
