Conference presentation titled "Landraces: Importance, Conservation & Evolution"

I just watched a fascinating talk on YouTube from the 2018 International
Conference of Wheat Landraces. Their website is https://wheat-landraces.ifoam.bio/ . I watched their first presentation of the first session and it was an excellent presentation titled "“Landraces: Importance, Conservation & Evolution”.

The video only has 592 views, so it hasn’t been widely seen. I thought the end of the presentation was the best part, starting at about the 18 minute mark. https://youtu.be/ZSaXzGn9QLY?si=fv35q4gmv8rg19-Y&t=1085 He talks about the importance of developing landraces to cope with worldwide climate changes and as a strategy to “bring back diversity to farmer’s fields”.

He also mentioned the work of Coit Suneson in the 1940’s - 1960’s. To me it sounds he was systematically doing similar work to what we are trying to do here at this goingtoseed forum. Does anyone know about his work, or about the work done that was described in the conference presentation?

Hi Charles, look at this post I made, talking about Ceccarelli and his approach, which sounds similar to ours: Same mindset, different approaches

Quick recap:
In conclusion, the video by Dr. Sandro Ceccarelli highlights the importance, conservation, and evolution of landraces. Landraces are traditional crop varieties that have been adapted to specific local environments, and they play a crucial role in food security, biodiversity, and cultural heritage. However, landraces are at risk from commercialization, globalization, and climate change, and there is a need for sustainable farming practices to maintain their diversity and resilience. The speaker calls for the conservation of landraces and the promotion of sustainable agricultural practices, using tools such as genetic analysis and plant breeding. Moreover, the video emphasizes the role of regional and international organizations in ensuring the survival and continued development of landraces. Overall, this section of the YouTube video presents a compelling case for the importance of preserving landraces for future generations.

Detailed recap:
00:00:00 In this section of a speech by Silvio Cescarelli at the International Conference on Wild Lands, the importance, conservation, and evolution of landraces are discussed. Landraces are traditional crop varieties that have been adapted to specific conditions and environments, such as soil and climate. They are important for biodiversity, food security, and resilience, as they provide the basis for local agriculture and enable adaptation to changing conditions. Cescarelli emphasizes the need for the conservation of landraces, as they are often at risk from modernising agriculture and globalization, and calls for the support of agricultural practices that promote local adaptation and diversity.

00:05:00 In this section of the YouTube video, Dr. S. Ceccarelli discusses the significance, conservation, and evolution of landraces. Landraces are traditional crop varieties that have been passed down for generations and are adapted to specific local conditions. He notes that landraces are crucial for food security and cultural heritage. Dr. Ceccarelli also highlights the challenges faced by landraces, such as loss of biodiversity, climate change, and commercialization. He emphasizes the need for conservation efforts and sustainable practices to maintain the diversity and resilience of landraces.

00:10:00 In this section of the video, the speaker discusses the importance of preserving landraces, which are traditional crops that have adapted to local environments over time. Landraces are diverse and possess unique genetic traits, making them valuable sources of agricultural knowledge and innovation. The speaker highlights various examples of landraces from different regions, including wheat, rice, and tomatoes, and emphasizes the importance of their conservation and cultivation to maintain genetic diversity and prevent the loss of valuable cultural heritage. The speaker also discusses the challenges facing landraces, such as the commercialization of farming and the impact of climate change, and stresses the need for international cooperation and support to ensure their survival and sustainable use.

00:15:00 In this section, the speaker discusses the importance of landraces and their conservation in agriculture. Landraces are traditional varieties of crops that have been adapted to local environments and are being threatened by modern farming practices. The speaker emphasizes the need for conservation and experimentation to maintain the diversity of landraces, using tools such as genetic analysis, plant breeding, and agroforestry.
00:20:00 In this section of the video titled “Landraces: Importance, Conservation & Evolution”, Sandro Ceccarelli discusses various topics related to landraces, including their evolution, importance, and conservation. He mentions various landraces found in Italy, such as “Marcire la bici si” and “Play è con te in salotto”, and speaks about European projects aimed at preserving and promoting these varieties. Ceccarelli emphasizes the role of regional and international organizations and the importance of sustainable farming practices to ensure the survival and continued development of these important cultural and agricultural heritages.
