the climate is very different from us surroundings of Cuzco even at 3800m altitude, we are on very different latitudes
a dry season: May-October
temperature day 20/25°C
night temperature 5/10°c
a rainy season: November - March
temperature day 20/23°C
night temperature 0/8°C
So not at all that the beans survive through negative temperatures. For the first phase of multiplication I will not try too much the culture in winters at home, or maybe in your greenhouse it is perhaps a good way to acclimate them for the first year.
These were all from Peru, the pods from an English grower related to Holly with black flowers. I didn’t dare to take the most striking ones. But @ThomasPicard knows who he is and might visit him.
And the next were from an Italian lady grower whose info is in the photo.
Would you like me @stephane_rave and @Hugo to get his contact and ask him about their growing period. I know him personnally living in higher elevation than Cusco, meaning for example they don’t grow tomato anymore. They moved a few years ago. (Link to july’s Alain interview, in French: Collectif PEPs I will repost in interesting video dump-french language)
Yes, please, I’m interested too. I’ve got few fava beans from them, but also corn and some beans. Could you ask about growing conditions/periods for those too?
I’ve deliberately got just those with some kind of a pattern, there were just few at that point and not any with fingerprint like/spirals pattern (which are really beautiful).
But, while browsing I’ve stumbled on Bolivian traditional variety Ur kupina which has that fingerprint pattern, and look what I’ve got this afternoon . Not all of them with a pattern as I hoped (based on the picture at the store), but still very nice
@polarca scrolling through older posts I’ve just realised you also have Ur kupina seeds, did you grow them this year?
It seems that mine are in (somewhat) better condition than those you originaly got? I still need to put them in the freezer, at least for a bit, before they go into the ground.
Yes, indeed I’ve been growing them and I got some really good ones in 2023, only to loose almost all to water voles this year. I barely have a handful to reboot from. It must be a super tasty one as the voles prioritize it! They go after the roots…
And yes, freeze the cr@p out of them, and soak them before planting, and pick out the bastards with forceps… it will be full of pupae if they come from the same source.
I’ve tried to cross them with Ianto’s Yellow, this fluorescent yellow thing. I’m not sure if I got any crosses as I just trusted nature (I planted these two in a block). That means I’ll have to grow all of Ianto’s Yellow and all of the Ur Kupina next year and see if there are any crosses. That would be king, although IDK, fluo yellow with brown swirls? Boring… I want fluo yellow beans with fluo pink2purple swirls.
