The Seed Library Network is creating a bunch of seed saving posters and getting them translated into French, Spanish, and Portuguese. However, after I sent them to the translator I realized I needed to take out USA references such as Plant Variety Protection and be more general. They also translated “landrace” and “landrace” and not sure if there is a better term. If you are fluent in French, we’d love your help with these two sentences for our seed saving posters that communities can post in their seed libraries:
Save seeds from open-pollinated, heirloom varieties, or landrace mixes. Don’t save commercial hybrids, patented varieties, or GMO seeds.
Conservez les graines de variétés à pollinisation libre, de variétés anciennes ou de mélanges de variétés locales. Ne conservez pas les hybrides commerciaux, les variétés brevetées ni les semences OGM.
I agree in general but don’t understand what’s intended by “landrace mixes” in original phrase, so it could fit instead of “melange de variétés locales”… or not!
Landraces is a new or unknown term to many people in the seed library community so instead of saying “landraces”, I said “landrace mixes” to indicate that the starting population was diverse.
