Translate Bar can be hidden now

I’ve made some improvements to the translation bar to enhance usability, particularly for those who don’t use it regularly.

On mobile devices, the bar can take up valuable screen space, block the top menu, or even shift the entire page downwards (common on iPhones). To address this, you now have the option to close it permanently. Once closed, your preference is saved in your browser as a cookie, so the bar won’t reappear on future visits.

If you ever need the translation bar again, it’s easy to restore. Simply click the Globe icon in the top navigation bar, and the bar will reappear.

Feel free to scream (kindly!) if I’ve broken something, if the layout somehow got worse, if it’s lagging, or if it doesn’t work on Android (etc)… It’s surprisingly easy to mess things up when tinkering with top bars, bottom bars, or any other kind of bar

I have a an issue of the top bar being offset just enough that I could not see the notification dot on my avatar/profile pic without swiping the page left. Now that has increased to where I cannot even see the avatar pic at all.
Everything still works but will probably be confusing for new users.

Pics…

What device are you on?
And what browser? The more details the better.

But you have no recollection of how it was in March, correct? End of March it broke for some users because of a bar that I effectively removed now. Or made it possible to remove. So it is even possible that you would have had the issue back then. I think it is likely something unrelated to the bar (since I just “undid” something).

Nevertheless, please give me details so I can check what it possibly may be.

Also please tell me exact width (in pixels) of your screen, I think it may be the globe icon that’s stretching the width to the point where it’s “too long” and your phone centers it so it gets cropped. Since it appears to be on both sides.

In addition, if you can check on any other device, that would be helpful as well. If it can be very device-dependent or a generic issue. Thanks!

ETA: please test again, I did some tentative styling for narrow screens! It scales OK for me now even if you only have ~400 pixels width (in a simulated environment, that is).

Thanks! That thing was annoying. I never used it

In march it was just enough that the notification dot could not be seen.

Something with the recent translation bar change is what pushed it completely off screen. Today was the first day it was like that.

Now the page is centered and not moveable left or right, but the avatar/profile pic is still off page and the bar itself can be moved left to see it.

Device is a unihertz android phone and browser is the brave browser. Ill try to figure out pixel width.

540 x 1200 pixel

It now works perfectly on my iphone! Thank you so much🙏🏽
I had problems using the site on phone due to the translate bar blocking the menu - not anymore🙌🏻

Please, test yet one more time (I also emailed you, you can disregard that, I just didn’t want to clog up the thread)

My pleasure!

Updated screenshot with gts removed and everything functions correctly…

Thank you Cathy! I had quietly endured the bar not being able to hide and it seems a lot of other users had done so too. Very neat how it works now. I hope people feel more satisfied using the forum again and we still have the option for translation help for users that don’t understand English (or users who prefer to write in their mother tongue).
