Try one of the cheap grow towers that uses soil, then make a cage, like a cylinder or tube to go around it to keep critters out. Use hardware cloth, its fencing shaped like small mesh and can be purchased in small sized pieces from Tractor Supply or Amazon. Or use a five gallon pail, with drainage holes, fill 4/5 with soil. Place cage around it to protect plants. A few cucumbers could grow like that.
Okay, now Im researching everything cucumber scouring seed availability…maybe looking for disease resistant accessions is better for now. Im thinking the orange fleshed fruits are only available for research, " to improve" nutritional density in the fruit. So we already know from GTS and Adaptation Gardening that the seeds need diversity in genetic material. As a community we can do that by growing every season and adding more varieties to the mix and simply sharing seed.

Oh yea, I’ve read this exact study. Here’s the full free version if you want to read it.
https://sci-hub.se/10.1007/s10722-019-00778-6
In that study I did find 1 email : ruchi_105@rediffmail.com
We can try to email them & see if they know where to get seeds.
Yes, ask until we get a definative “no” but Im sure there may be guidelines, like a seed increase, or participating in yhe research…I was able to see the article without having to buy it…im a bit slower these days, computing has changed so very much. You may have posted the article already. But that just means not much going on for these cucumbers…and researchers are challenged to increase nutrition as well. Changing colors is one way to do it…Um looking for the most recent research paper, maybe that would be the approach to the university. But, if its all gummed up with patent registration, we may not have a chance. IDK how seed “travels” thru the process and the proper sequence for requests, or if seed is available to non researchers.
Would really suck is seeds aren’t avialble to non-researchers. I mean at this point I meat the definitions of a Researcher (I’m just not connected to a Government Body or University thus not “Official”).
I was hoping to piggie back off the GTS Non-Profit organization, it seems more likely to successfully request seeds if your tied to some organization rather than a 1 man job.
If it’s this hard, we gonna have to start horizontally transfering the orange Flesh color from Cucumis melo into Cucumis sativus, limitations breed creativity after all.
I really want to participate with the other researchers but It feels like I live in my own world, callaboration with them would’ve been very beneficial for both parties. Sadly I don’t have much contacts with Researchers (Again establishing connections opens so many doors of Opportunity). I’m very thankful for GTS forums as I can cross-pollinate ideas with like-minded people. Together I’m confidant we will eventually find a solution, even if it is a lil “Outside” the box.
Indeed it has (Now even AI searches thru Studies, great way to summarize info). no worries together with our strengths & weaknesses we’ll find a way to solve these issues.
Just a random thought, but have you ever considered walking into the science building of your local university and seeing if there are any professors in the botany department who are in their offices and willing to chat with you?
If you’d have to be a student there to get access to the professors, you could audit a botany course that looks interesting to you, and then wander into the building during office hours and look for interesting professors to talk to.
Alternately, you could simply call up the university and ask for professors you can talk to about a specific project you’re researching. I betcha there’d be someone who’d be willing to get into an e-mail conversation with you about a niche subject they’re passionate about. You could probably do this with any university, not just one near you.
That’s the sort of thing nonfiction writers often do when they’re researching a niche subject to write a book or an article about. Many professors are wildly enthusiastic to share information they know with an interested party.
Another strategy: if your local college/university has a student research symposium (usually free and open, but not very well advertised), show up and chat with students and faculty about their research.
Am I the only university person in the group? I am getting my list ready to request peppers soon (focus on low desert or otherwise hot climates), and I have a colleague who may request sunflowers for his research next year.
hmm… it’s worth try. I’m not sure there even is a Botany department at my local colleges, mostly landscaping kind of things. I went to college & droped out, no one was interested in growing food.
oh that’s a Smart idea! I think it’s worth a try.
OH!? Fantastic, these seem like Social Networking Events, no?
Maybe, I was but dropped out, that doesn’t count no?
Yes, I’m trying to go thru cooperative extension and the university. Im alumni thru NAU and graduated from Environmental Science program and more. But our focus of study was trees instead of vegetables. But many professors i had studied under have passed away.
And, o have to be cautious most all of the research is for commercial agriculture and landrace is almost a dirty word. Organic growing isnt very big here, its all chemical based farming.
My bachelor’s degree was in English. I loved my university, I still love visiting it and consider it home, and I’m glad I have a bachelor’s degree from there, but I probably won’t pursue a graduate degree. I enjoy learning more when I set my own goals and don’t need to fill out a whole lot of paperwork.
If I ever did decide to go back to school, it would probably be to study botany, especially if it would get me cool opportunities to do scientific studies with other botany geeks.
It’s something I really would seriously consider, if the time ever comes that tuition is free.
Landrace a dirty word? I thought we already got past that
Ooh! What kinds of trees did you study? Edible Trees?
haha, yea… this also isn’t an effective way to Learn.
@Kimzy I did find this chinese Melon (Cucumis melo) with Pink Flesh!? I didn’t even know Pink Flesh existed & I’ve done a lot of Research on Melon Diversity so it surprised me for sure. Maybe it’s actually Peach Orange with Light effects?
http://www.skyceed.com/skyceed/products/53026619.html
I haven’t searched if it’s on GRIN but can we order from Chinese Seed Sites? I haven’t found the Orange Flesh Cucumber yet but maybe just maybe a seed seller sells it somewhere On a Chinese Website, at least that way We’d have a lead. (But’s it’s rare even in China).
When I spoke to cooperative extension guy, who seemed all about organic farming and looking at soil microbes, I said landrace and he frowned. Maybe they dont like freelance seed breeding. He told another person dont let onions go to seed or melons…but im miles away from those crops so no pollen transfer. I did get positive feedback from the worm farm here, they let me plant diverse seed in the garden.
Yes, there is a melon like this…look at Baker Creek heirlooms…
No edible trees, it was for lumber or preventing soil erosion.
oh my… look like we are still very early in the Landrace Gardening Trend . Does he do Permaculture or Regenrative Farming?
REALLY!? I’ve looked around their site & couldn’t find a Pink Fleshed Cucumis melo Melon at all, only some Orange Flesh Melons that look Peachy.
UPDATAE, so one of the Indian Researchers I emailed Responded Back!? @Kimzy
ruchi_105@rediffmail.com
“Yes. we have orange flesh cucumber in our collection. Pl write a formal letter to Director, NBPGR for access to this germplasm. If you are a non Indian company you need to get permission from NBA.”
This is good news, they have the Orange Flesh Cucumber (Just the Indian Version of it)!
Now what? How should I respond, how do I write a formal PI letter to Director NBPGR? Aparently It’s a Polish version of GRIN here.
If were’ non-indian company, we need to get permission from the NBA (Like bruh? The National Basketball Asociation
, of course it’s gotta stand for something else)? This sounds too Funny out of context
.
Oh, I probly have them confused.
