Be honest, but ask what the NBA stands for and if a back yard type gardener would have permission to grow out the seed. He will either explain the process or shut you down. Its up to you if youd like to share your phylogenetic background and why you’re interested in the seed. What does the longer acronym stand for? Beyter yet, wait a few days let me see what GTS can or cant do…im not sure if they put forth a formal request or not…it may be if we arent actively conducting a research project, then we cant request the seed. But be thankful at least you did get a response.
Let me review…Cucumis melo is like an Armenian cucumber and the orange flesh type is from China or India? And the researcher from India responded to an email…so I forwarded info to GTS for assistance to see if we are able to requst officially.
Its ok to research accessions for all the seeds. You never know where a door might open, but be sure to know we must try and grow out the seed. Knowing the grow conditions where the seed does grow is also helpful.
We would also ask for a commitment to grow the seed as well, from the group. But, yes there are a handful of growers saving seed to the likes of a mini seed vault. From what Ive seen most are locally adapted heirlooms and arent sold thru seed stores. Seed swap events is where the seed can be traded. So getting to know your community is important. Growing seed in your area is important.
Technology question…how do you get your smart phone keyboard to type italics? I gotta get my laptop fixed…
That’s what I’ll do. Are our GTS Cucumber Seed mixes is enough to count as a Research project?
I’m thankful I got a responce, it’s why I messaged every researcher that had an email . Knock on enough doors & you’ll get an answer.
Yes Cucumis melo are all Muskmelons, Armenian Cucumbers, Asain Apple Melons & Dosakai Vegetable Melons.
Both Orange type from Indian & China are Truly Cucumis sativus with Orange Flesh.
Exactly! I have no land so I definitely won’t be doing the growing part (Someone else from GTS with land will have to, maybe you can?), but when I get land I will! The Orange Flesh Cucumbers are very resilient because they are already landraces (Especially the ones from India where it’s super hot, many parts also desert climate).
YES! I think the GTS Community is like a Back up seed bank/vault. Rare & Endangered Species & Varieties can be preserved this way.
Oh yea, I’ve been to a seed swap recently, it was fun to meet like-minded people (Well mostly just 1 guy , it’s a VERY small tiny seed swap, just a box). I told him about GTS, hopefully they can help it grow.
Idk, just type a 2 * * outside the word you want italicized. That’s how it works on these forums, it should work regardless of which smartphone.
Honestly IDK, research is done with extensive report writing and data collection, we mostly just grow stuff each season. Maybe some of the original work growing would count but im not versed on how its all defined.
Somewhere on facebook there are others with seed vault collections of seed. I dont remember exactly where, but did see posts of them over the past two years. Hadn’t paid attention until starting participation with GTS.
Cucumis melo**
Good to know others do seed vault banking, I might one day built a dedicated freezer. GTS is a Living Seed bank.
No I mean * word * like this ,
Sorry instructions not clear
Told ya…lol im so behing in tech and typing on all these machines…thanks for the visual, got it!
I have a degree, but it wasnt botany or vegetable focused. I too am reaching out to professor’s to see what they suggest as a way forward. But I like simply growing and taste testing…just need a simple plan forward.
Honestly that’s all you need, if illiterate plant breeders could do it so simply & easily, anyone can!
You get exactly what you keep selecting for, technically all seed savers are plant breeders.
