Hi plant people
I am hoping to start a project to breed a storage/pickling cucumber. The ideal is a variety which produces mature fruit which can be stored at room temperature in the subtropics for a month or three, so that the late summer to mid autumn harvest can be gradually fermented into pickles through autumn/winter. In our warm climate fermented pickles are only good for a few weeks for each batch, so a cucumber that needs to be pickled all at once isn’t that useful (unless you have unlimited fridge space for bulky jars of pickles, and even then they keep slowly fermenting beyond optimum).
Brown Russian and giant Russian types with the thick outer skin seem to be the optimum starting place. We also have a rare traditional landrace called Gympie Gold which will be in the mix. But I am looking for suggestions of types/varieties that might help contribute to this end goal.
